BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 17 Nova Southeastern tennis team (5-6) were defeated by the NCAA Division I Georgetown Hoyas (7-3), 6-3, at home Friday.
The Sharks picked up two victories in doubles play and one in top-flight singles. The two doubles wins came in the second and third draws, starting with sophomore duo
Charlotte Cote (Montreal, Canada) and
Alexandra Johansson (Sydney, Australia), who defeated Sophie Panares and Kelly Comolli, 8-2. In the third flight,
Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) and
Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) took down Michelle Pratt and Nora Montgomery, 8-2.
In the top doubles draw,
Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Munich, Germany) teamed with senior
Austin Lavallii (Williamston, Mich.) in a tough loss to Vicky Sekely and Liz Hamlin, 8-5. After the match, Kierberg suffered an injury and could not continue as the Sharks’ top player in singles play.
Johansson took Kierberg’s place and held down her spot well, going to three sets with Sekely. The Hoya took the first set, 6-4, before Johansson came back to even it out with a 6-4 win over her own. With the set tied, 2-2, Sekely retired and the Sharks earned the victory.
However, Georgetown overpowered the Sharks and won the remaining singles matches. Cote competed in the second draw for the first time this year and lost to Commoli, 6-1, 6-2. In the third slot,
Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.) fell to Madeline Jaeger, 6-2, 6-0.
Lavallii made her singles season debut and fought hard in a loss to Panarese. Lavallii forced the visitor to a 7-5 first set before falling in the second, 6-1. Pintado moved up from her usual sixth flight and lost to Hamlin, 6-1, 6-0.
Iryna Serdyuk (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) was called upon to fill in for Kierberg’s absence and battled to a three set loss to Taylor Perz, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
The Sharks will break before returning at home to face Rutgers on March 18 at 1 p.m.
