FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team hits the road for the first time on the young season as they take part in three matches over the weekend in the Eckerd College Classic in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Sharks (3-1) will have two matches on Friday, Sept. 13, against UPR-Rio Piedras at 11 a.m., and Wilmington at 5:45 p.m. The latter squad is 1-3 so far this season. On the following day, NSU will take on Bentley, at 3:30 p.m. Like the Sharks, the Falcons too are 3-1.
NSU won three out of four at home in the season-opening Shark Classic, earning clean sweeps in all three of their wins (against Virginia State, Barton and Pfeiffer). They finished as one of four squads to have just one loss in the event; Findlay, at 4-0, was the only undefeated squad, and handed the Sharks their only loss thus far this year.
Individually,
Sydney Cook (So., Miami) paces the squad with 36 kills (her average of 3.0 per set ranks her seventh in the Sunshine State Conference), with
Dana Holger (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) just behind her with 34. Freshman
Katie Pyles (Denver) has a team-high 79 assists (fifth in the conference), and is one of four players with 20 or more digs (21), along with Cook (32), Holger (28) and libero
Candice Johnson (Jr., Chuluota, Fla.), who has 26. Johnson is tied for sixth in the SSC in aces, with seven in the first four matches of her NSU career.
