FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men's (3-1-0) and women's soccer (4-1-0) teams will hit the road as they travel to Tampa, Saturday, Sept. 21, in a non-conference doubleheader. The women start the night, with a 5 p.m. start time, while the men's kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The women's soccer team enters Saturday's matchup with four victories, a mark that already matches last year's win total. The Sharks are currently riding a three-game winning streak, dating back to the CSU Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 13 and 15. NSU's last win streak of three or more dates back to the four-game winning streak to start the 2011 season.
This past Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Sharks pummeled the Lynn Fighting Knights, 5-1, with the help of Malin Broberg's (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) three-goal performance, and put the Knights away early, leading 4-1 at halftime. Broberg currently leads the Sunshine State Conference in goals, with seven.
The women will face their toughest opponent to date, in No. 5 Tampa, who enters the weekend with a 6-0 record. Tampa has scored 30 goals and only allowed two; both coming against Barry in a 3-2 double overtime game on Wednesday. The Spartans return six All-SSC First Team selections from a year ago to this year's squad. Tampa's Gabby Russo and Cici Gonzalez lead UT offensively, scoring five goals each. These two teams met in Tampa last season, where the Sharks held the eventual SSC champs and one of the nation's leading scoring teams scoreless, in a 0-0 double overtime draw.
The men's team also comes into the weekend on a three-game winning streak, most recently beating No. 6 Lynn, last year's national champions, 4-1 on Wednesday night.. NSU has been extremely balanced offensively, as eight different players for the Sharks have at least one goal this season.
The Sharks' schedule does not get any easier as they take on another nationally-ranked team in No. 18 Tampa. The Spartans (3-0-1) have outscored opponents 12-3 in large part due to Tyler Blackwood's team-leading five goals. UT is most recently coming off a 2-1 overtime win over Barry in Miami Shores, Fla. on Wednesday.
When these teams met last season in Tampa, the Spartans won 2-1, overcoming NSU's early 1-0 lead in the first half. Tampa scored both of its goals in the final 18 minutes of the match to down the Sharks.
