Rowing team recognized with banner ceremony

Box Score

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team fell to Eckerd College in straight sets Friday at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center, 25-13, 25-18, 25-11.

Eckerd (7-2, 1-0 SSC) went out fast in the first set over the Sharks (3-6, 0-1 SSC), 7-1 and 13-2. The closest NSU would get was eight, but the score at that point was 20-12. The Tritons scored five of the last six points of the set to go up 1-0.

NSU's closest set was the second, when the Shark Night faithful was their loudest. After a 4-1 start to the frame, in favor of the home team, Eckerd came back with five straight to take the lead. For the next 26 rallies, the margin between the two teams was never more than four points. Unfortunately for the Sharks, the biggest momentum swing came late, when Eckerd went on a 6-0 run to take it from 16-16 to 22-16. The Tritons went on to a 25-18 set victory.

In the third, Eckerd had spurts of 7-0 (from down 4-3 to up 10-4) and 9-2 (extending their 15-8 lead to 24-10). They finished off their sixth straight victory with their fifth straight sweep, 25-11 in the final set.

Besides Shark Night, the National Championship-winning NSU rowing team was recognized between the second and third sets. Their championship banner was unfurled in the west end zone.

Dana Holger (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) had eight kills to lead the Sharks, while Katie Pyles (Fr., Denver) added five. Pyles led the team with nine digs and 14 assists, while Maison Burr (Fr., St. Clair, Mich.) added a career-high eight in the latter category.

NSU will be right back in action for another SSC contest on Saturday when they host Florida Southern. First serve will be at 4 p.m. from the NSU Arena. Tune back in HERE for live audio and video from the match.
