FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team (1-1-0) dropped their first match of the season against the Georgia College Bobcats (1-1-0), 3-1, at the NSU Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon.
The Sharks had an electrifying start to the game, when in the 12th minute Malin Broberg (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) controlled a beautiful ball over the top from Rut Kristjansdottir (Fr., Reykjavik, Iceland), and calmly put the ball in the back of the net for her second goal in as many games. The match would go into halftime with the 1-0 Shark advantage.
The Bobcats came out of the second half break strong, when just 41 seconds in GCU attacker Ashley Veilleux managed to get through the Sharks backline and tallied the Bobcats first goal of the season.
Eleven minutes later, after some back-and-forth action, the Bobcats got on the board for the second time, when Kessler Matheson played a low cross through the box to find an open Abby Dalton back post. Dalton put the ball near post on a one-time strike past the sprawling Sandra Rolon (Jr., San Juan, P.R.).
In the closing minutes, GCU was awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute of the match. The Bobcats converted on the penalty to put the game out of reach, with four minutes left.
The Sharks outshot their opponent 15-9 and forced the GCU goalkeeper Jessica Catapano to seven big saves in the match.
Rolon finished with a season-high five saves. GCU edged the Sharks 3-2 on corner kicks.
The Sharks will take a little break before they hit the road to take on North Alabama and Lenoir Rhyne in Columbus, Ga. on Sept. 13 and Sept. 15, respectively.
