FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team travels to Winter Park, Fla. to participate in the South Region Crossover Tournament hosted by Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, this Friday and Saturday.
NSU faces Union (Tennessee) in their first match of the weekend at 11 a.m. on Friday, followed by a 5 p.m. game against the West Georgia Wolves. On Saturday, the Sharks have one match, at 3 p.m. against the West Alabama Tigers.
The Sharks come back from a week-long break after falling to No. 1 Tampa, 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-17). NSU continues to lead the conference ranks in blocks with 68.5, with
Sydney Cook (Jr., Miami, Fla.) placing second in the Sunshine State with 27.
Caitlin Donahue (Jr., Miami, Fla.) is in the fourth spot with 25.
UnionUnion (5-14) competes in the tournament coming off a 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 25-17, 31-29) win against Mississippi College. Hannah Huguley led the team in a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, followed by Mallory Baker with 11 kills and four digs.
The match on Friday will mark the first-ever competition between the Sharks and Union.
West Georgia The West Georgia volleyball team holds a 4-13 overall record and is 2-11 in the Gulf South Conference. Most recently, the Wolves fell to Alabama-Huntsville, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 26-24). Drea Matthews and Kendall Williams both led the match with eight kills while Casey Roethler had a team-high 22 digs. Ancrum Tiffany leads the team this season in kills with 144 and hitting percentage at .163. Defensively, Reothler leads the team in digs with 223.
NSU holds an all-time 4-1 record between the teams. In their last competition, the Sharks swept West Georgia, 3-0, on Oct. 15, 2010.
West AlabamaThe West Alabama Tigers are currently 7-11, with a 6-7 Gulf South Conference record. The Tigers participate in the tournament after falling to the Christian Brothers Buccaneers in five sets (25-11, 22-25, 20-25, 25-18, 8-15). Despite the loss, West Alabama held the better hitting percentage of.243, led by Brinsley Cooper and Alexis Gillis for a combined 29 kills.
NSU also leads in the overall record against the Tigers, 4-1. Both teams battled for the win in their last meeting, but the Sharks took the 3-2 (25-21, 26-24, 25-21, 25-21, 15-12) victory exactly a year from this year's competition on Oct. 18, 2013.
In the match, Cook set a 2013 season best with 19 kills while
Dana Holger (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) had 16. Katie Pyles set a career high of 49 assists in the match while
Candice Johnson (Sr., Chuluota, Fla.) notched 25 digs, with Holger adding 17 and Cook 15.
