Volleyball Faces No. 1 Tampa on Saturday

Sharks finish season on the road.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (13-14, 6-9 SSC) faces No. 1 Tampa (26-1, 14-0 SSC) on Nov. 15 in Tampa, Fla. in the final match of the regular season.

The Sharks return to the court after thwarting the Barry Buccaneers, 3-1 (25-23, 30-32, 25-22, 25-17), Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Sydney Cook (Jr., Miami, Fla.) led the team on a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs, followed by Dana Holger (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn.), who also posted a double-double on 12 kills and 16 digs. Katie Pyles (So., Denver, Colo.) led the team in assists with 44 while Candice Johnson (Sr., Chuluota, Fla.) notched a team-high 22 digs.

The win marked back-to-back SSC victories, after defeating Saint Leo 3-1 (31-29, 25-17, 21-25, 25-16), Saturday, Nov. 8. This was the first time the Sharks have beaten Saint Leo in exactly six years. The last time the Sharks defeated the Lions was on Nov. 8, 2008.

Also, it was the second time the Sharks have notched two consecutive SSC wins in a row this season. The last time the program saw two SSC win streaks was in 2009.
The wins have pushed the Sharks higher in the SSC stat rankings as well. Cook is now third in kills with 311 (avg. 3.11 per set) and fourth in blocks with 95, while Pyles is fourth in assists with 783 (avg 7.93 per set).

No. 1 Tampa
Tampa is currently on a 16 match winning streak and are perfect in the SSC with a 14-0 record. The Spartans head coach, Chris Catanch, holds a 26-1 overall record, with this season marking the 35th straight season in which the Spartans have won over 20 games.

Junior Berkley Whaley is dominate all over the court, leading the Spartans offense with 356 total kills on a .360 attack percentage.  Setter Kahley Patrick is currently fourth in the nation with 12.23 assists per set and leads the SSC with 1101 assists.

Earlier in the season, the Sharks fell to the Spartans, 3-0. Cook posted a double-double on the night with 11 kills and 17 digs, followed by Natalie Melcher (Fr., Rishon Letzion, Isreal), who had eight kills with five digs. Pyles led the team in assists with 24, while Johnson notched a team-high 21 digs.
