BOCA RATON, Fla. -- In their return to Florida, the Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (14-7, 5-3 SSC) picked up a 3-2 Sunshine State Conference victory over Lynn (11-8, 2-6 SSC) on Tuesday night at the de Hoernle Center to win their second straight match. The Sharks defeated the Fighting Knights in a five-set marathon that took nearly two hours and 20 minutes to complete 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 24-26, 17-15.
The win gave NSU the season sweep over Lynn after having picked up a 3-0 win over the Fighting Knights earlier this year. Although in the beginning, it looked as though the Sharks were going to make it a quick night after taking a 2-0 match lead, Lynn challenged that notion and tied it up to send it into a decisive fifth set. The Fighting Knights even extended the final set beyond the norm, but NSU showed their GR1T to pull off a 17-15 win to take the match. NSU has now won three out of their last four matches.
"Tonight was a full team effort and we wouldn't have pulled it off without each person stepping up," head coach Jenn King said. "We had three players with double-digit kills and four with double-digit digs, which shows true teamwork that is needed to win. It was also great to have Sydney back in the rotation, especially when she came up with a huge block to get us to match point. This is a great start to the second half of conference play for the Sharks!"
Although the night was met with a ton of individual success and career-highs, the highlight of the evening was veteran
Sydney Cook's (Sr., Miami, Fla.) return to active duty. Having missed the last 10 matches, Cook returned on Tuesday night and had a modest six kills and four blocks in limited action, one of which set up match point for the Sharks in the fifth set.
Dana Holger (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) continued to be a dominant force for NSU this season. She led the team once again in kills after matching her career-high of 22 for the fourth time this season. Holger finished with the double-double adding 11 digs, but was also a force at the net coming up with seven blocks for the Sharks, including four solos.
For the second straight match,
Caitlin Donahue (Sr., Miami, Fla.) has begun to emerge as a formidable force. She was second on the team in kills posting a career-high 15 on the night and hit a whopping .565.
Denvyr Tyler-Palmer (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) added 11 kills in the win, while
Devyn Main (So., Port Charlotte, Fla.) matched her career-high nine blocks that she set in the Sharks' last match at the regional crossover.
Although a staple in the Sharks' lineup this season defensively, freshman
Megan Burns (Sylvania, Ohio) stepped up her individual performance posting a career-best 18 digs to lead NSU. She was followed by
Kaelyn Brock (So., La Quinta, Calif.) with 14 and
Katie Pyles (Jr., Denver, Colo.) posted yet another double-double with 49 assists and 12 digs.
With only a few days to prepare, the Sharks will return to action on Friday, Oct. 23 hosting the SSC's top-ranked team in Tampa at 7 p.m. The Spartans roll into Fort Lauderdale as the No. 1 ranked team in Division II with a 16-3 overall record and an unblemished 6-0 mark in the SSC.
