FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team fell in their final match of the 2015 season, as Eckerd slipped in a late goal to win Saturday night, 1-0.
The Sharks (5-9-0, 1-7-0 SSC) honored six players prior to their sendoff match:
Matthias Bruno (Rome, Italy),
Flavio Devoto (Rome, Italy),
Karl Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden),
Stefano Fanfoni (Cremona, Italy),
Jo Jien Lee (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and
Juan Rodriguez (Lima, Peru). Five of the six started, including Lee in goal, and he nearly doubled his career-high in saves with nine against the Tritons (8-3-1, 4-2-1 SSC).
The one he couldn't get to happened as the last of three, all coming in rapid-fire succession. In the 81st minute, Matheus Assumpcao got off two close-in shots, the first blocked by a Shark defender, the second batted away by Lee. But that deflection trickled over to Tolin Vaccaro, and the third attempt was true, over the outstretched arm of the Shark goalkeeper for what turned out to the game's lone goal.
Vaccaro's shot was the 22nd of 24 taken Saturday for Eckerd, compared to just six for NSU. The Sharks had two on target, early on by
Viktor Jonsson (Jr., Reykjavik, Iceland), saved by EC keeper Alex Gott in the 23rd, and midway through the second, also saved by Gott off the foot of Fanfoni in the 67th.
Bruno and Devoto wrapped their careers, like Lee, going the full time. Fanfoni played 74 minutes in his final match, with Rodriguez on for 43.
