Volleyball Falls in SSC Battle at Barry, 3-1

Sharks end up splitting with Barry in regular season series.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- On the road again, the Nova Southeastern University Sharks (14-9, 5-5 SSC) dropped a Sunshine State Conference matchup against Barry (11-7, 6-3 SSC) on Tuesday night at the Health & Sports Center. The Sharks fell in four sets 25-20, 18-25, 25-15, 25-21.

In a heated season rivalry between the two, NSU picked up a five set win over Barry earlier in the season when the Sharks hosted the Bucs at the NSU Arena. However, in their final regular season meeting of the year, Barry managed to pull out the four set win over NSU.

In the opening set, NSU jumped out to an early 8-3 lead. However, it didn't take long for Barry to regroup on their home court to go on a 10-4 run that resulted in the Bucs taking a 13-12 lead and forcing the Sharks to their first timeout. Coming out of the break, Barry sustained the momentum and never trailed again taking the first set 25-20.

In the second set, the roles were reversed as Barry jumped out to the early 8-3 lead. NSU then went on a 7-2 run of their own to tie the frame up at 10 apiece and eventually took a 13-12 lead they never relinquished. The Sharks closed out the set outscoring the Buccaneers 12-4 for a 25-18 win and evened the match at 1-1.

After hitting a blistering .400 in the second set, NSU struggled throughout the third to get their offense going. Despite taking an early two point lead, the Buccaneers managed to get the Sharks out of system and took advantage of several miscues down the stretch to take the third set 25-15 and a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth and final set, it looked as though the Sharks had found a rhythm and were on a roll jumping out to a 14-9 lead. However, Barry fought back and went on an 11-5 run that gave the Bucs a 21-20 lead. Barry went on to outscore NSU 4-1 in the final points for the 25-21 set four victory to take the match 3-1.

Dana Holger (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) led the Sharks with 12 kills followed by Caitlin Donahue (Sr., Miami, Fla.) with 11 and hit a .579 clip. Denvyr Tyler-Palmer (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) finished with 10 kills, while Megan Burns (Fr., Sylvania, Ohio) led the team with 19 digs. Katie Pyles (Jr., Denver, Colo.) posted yet another double-double performance with 31 assists and 10 digs, and Sydney Cook (Sr., Miami, Fla.) finished with 15 digs, good enough for second on the team.

The Sharks will return to action on Friday when they host Florida Southern at the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center in Sunshine State Conference action at 7 p.m.
