UPDATED WITH OPPONENT AND GAMETIME FOR FRIDAY SEMIFINAL
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 24 Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team prevailed in overtime on Thursday night against Saint Leo, 1-0, and in doing so, clinched the Sunshine State Conference's No. 2 seed in next week's postseason tournament.
The Sharks (12-3-1, 5-2-1 SSC) and Lions (7-8-1, 3-5-0 SSC) battled to a 90-minute stalemate, but just 52 seconds into the first extra frame, NSU's
Julia Nytorp (Sr., Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) put a shot towards goal. It deflected off of a Saint Leo defender and past their diving goalkeeper Abby Evans, crossing over the goal line to give NSU the win, as the entire team rushed to and piled on their teammate near the Lions' goalbox.
The squad not only earns the No. 2 seed in the 2015 SSC Championship, but the league's coveted second first-round bye. They will take on No. 3 seed Tampa, winners on Nov. 3 over Saint Leo in double overtime, 5-4 on penalty kicks. Game time for the Friday semifinal is at 4:30 p.m. and will be held at Buccaneer Field in Miami Shores, hosted by top seed Barry.
Prior to Thursday's extra time, NSU held a slight shot advantage, 11-10. Seven of those 11 were on goal, all saved by Evans. That included the home team's first penalty kick opportunity of the year, a low line-drive screamer by
Sierra Lelii (R-Sr., Seminole, Fla.) in the 60th minute, batted away by the Lions' keeper. Lelii had five of the team's 12 attempts, followed by Nytorp with three, including the game-winner.
Jordan Lentz (So., Cape Coral, Fla.) had four saves in 90 minutes-plus, two in each half of regulation, and improved her season record to 6-1-1. Forming a nearly impenetrable wall in front of her and playing every second of the match were defenders
Bailey Corbin (So., Lampeter, Pa.),
Sabrina Magno (So., Lake Mary, Fla.),
Cydney Niedermeyer (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) and
Cameron Wylie (Sr., Dallas, Texas), as did midfielders
Samantha Gestido (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) and Nytorp.
