Volleyball Wins Second-Straight SSC Matchup

Sharks complete the season sweep over Florida Tech.

FORT LAUDERDALE -- The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (16-9, 7-5 SSC) picked up their second straight Sunshine State Conference win, this time 3-1 over the Florida Tech Panthers (11-12, 2-9 SSC) on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center. The Sharks won by set scores of 25-15, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18.

"Today's match just shows that in the Sunshine State Conference, it doesn't matter what you did the day before because each and every opponent is a battle," head coach Jenn King said. " I'm really excited for Megan too. She stepped into the libero jersey and nabbed back-to-back 30-dig matches,"

Megan Burns (Fr., Sylvania, Ohio) as referenced by King is fresh off a career-best 31-dig performance from the night before. She followed that performance with yet another 30-plus dig night this time besting her career-high set less that 24 hours before with 33 and continues to improve defensively as a rookie.

Coming into today's match against the Panthers, NSU was carrying over tons of emotion from their five-set win the night before over No. 17 Florida Southern. With that, the Sharks exploded out the gates and hit a blazing .586 as a team. Denvyr Tyler-Palmer (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) erupted with seven kills in the opening set to lead the Sharks to a convincing 25-15 win and a 1-0 match lead.

After breaking a 5-5 score in the second set, NSU outscored Florida Tech 20-13 the remainder of the set and won 25-18. This time it was Caitlin Donahue's (Sr., Miami, Fla.) turn in the middle to take the lead. She led the Sharks in the frame with six kills and hit a whopping .750.

In the third set, NSU struggled to get any sparks offensively. Hitting only .109 as a team, the Sharks trailed through the first 19 points and then tied it at 10-10. After fighting off six more tie scores down the stretch, it was Florida Tech that pulled through with a 25-23 win to narrow the match gap to 2-1. In the fourth, NSU flipped the switch back in their favor and took control of the final set leading from the opening serve. Florida Tech pulled to within one, but after a strategic timeout to control the game flow, the Sharks cruised to a 25-18 final to take the match 3-1.

Dana Holger (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) led the Sharks' offense again, this time posting a match-high 19 kills, but added a .327 hitting percentage and 16 digs for the double-double. Tyler-Palmer finished behind Holger with 17 kills, while Donahue matched her career-high 15 kills on 24 attempts and hit a .542 clip.

The Sharks will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 3 when they travel to West Palm Beach, Fla. where they will face No. 14 Palm Beach Atlantic. Earlier this season NSU hosted PBA at the NSU Arena and fell in three straight sets.
