Women's Soccer Comes Alive in Second Half in 5-2 Matinee Win

Sharks overcome two-goal deficit to win at Webber International

BABSON PARK, Fla. – It took a second-half comeback, but the Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team was able to run their win streak to six, tallying five goals after the break for all of their scoring in a 5-2 win over Webber International.

In the span of 4:21 early in the second half, the Sharks (9-2) poured in three goals to overcome what was a two-score deficit to the Warriors (2-5) at halftime. Cydney Niedermeyer (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) was the first to put one in, in the 50th minute. It wasn't one of her customary headers, but instead as she battled for and won a loose ball, off a free kick from Samantha Gestido (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) for her team-leading seventh assist.

Then, just 1:22 later, Sierra Lelii (R-Sr., Seminole, Fla.) got her 14th goal of the season, firing one right side with the Warriors' keeper far left in goal. The go-ahead came 2:59 after that. It nearly came from Carley Montgomery (So., Sanford, Fla.), but her effort went off the left post before ricocheting directly to teammate Julia Nytorp (Sr., Örnsköldsvik, Sweden), putting the Sharks up 3-2.

With still over 37 minutes to go at that point, NSU staved off a couple of good looks by the home team before adding some padding. The first came at 26:58, when Emily Stearns (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) snuck one in from the right side, deflected off of the WIU keeper, with the assist going to Sarah Keville (Sr., Vero Beach, Fla.); the second 1:01 after that, when Gestido was given the freedom to attempt a free kick from over 30 yards out, and nailed it top right for a three-goal cushion.

The shot advantage for the Sharks, 9-5 at the break, ballooned to a 21-12 edge at the end of the match. Leading the way with six each were Lelii and Montgomery. Jordan Lentz (So., Fort Myers, Fla.) improved to 5-1 on the season, playing all but the last six minutes in net before giving way to Olivia Post (Fr., Evanston, Ill.).

NSU will only have Sunshine State Conference outings remaining, beginning this Saturday with the first of five asa they host Saint Leo at the NSU Soccer Complex. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
