FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's volleyball team (19-11, 9-6 SSC) picked up a hard fought 3-2 win against Sunshine State Conference rival Saint Leo Lions (18-10, 9-6 SSC) on Saturday at the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center. What everyone expected to be night of celebration for the graduating Nova Southeastern University seniors became much more as he Sharks won the match in five sets 21-25, 25-22,19-25, 25-22, 15-8 and kept their five-set match win streak alive, now at 8-0.
Before the match, the Sharks recognized their three seniors of the volleyball team, as they were about to play their last home game of their career at NSU.
Caitlin Donahue (Sr., Miami, Fla.),
Sydney Cook (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and
Dana Holger (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) were honored for their tremendous work on and off the court as NSU Sharks. The ceremony became more significant as the Sharks played with such passion and picked up their last win at home of the regular 2015 season schedule.
In what it looked to be a tough game for Saint Leo, transformed into a storm as the Sharks showcased an impressive comeback after being down 2-1 at the end of the third set. Freshman,
Megan Burns (Sylvania, Ohio.) was a significant figure on defense as she recorded a new career-high 36 digs, which is the most digns in a single match for NSU sincde 2001. The Lions went from having a .355 hitting percentage in the first set down to a .197 overall at the end of the match.
The Sharks topped the Lions in kills by a difference of two, which explains how close the battle was throughout. Holger had the most kills for NSU with 19 and was second in digs with 17. Also an important piece to the attacking puzzle was freshman, Denvyr Tyle-Palmer (Jacksonville, Fla.) with 18 total kills. The Sharks trailed the Lions in most of the third set, which they dropped. The comeback came in the fourth set where the score was mostly even throughout making the set that much more intense. At the end of the fourth set the Sharks were finally able to take a two point lead, which led to the winning of the final decisive set 15-8.
Junior,
Katie Pyles (Denver, Colo.) added 46 assists and the team's best hitting percentage at .320. After overcoming the tough chase of the Lions, the Sharks took ownership of the match and remain in a second-place tie in the SSC standings.
