WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University volleyball squad finished off their weekend road trip with a clean sweep of Sunshine State Conference rival Rollins, finishing them off in three sets on Saturday at the Alfond Sports Center.
The Sharks (18-10, 8-5 SSC) led wire-to-wire in each of the first two frames and used a huge 14-0 run in the third to top the Tars (10-16, 5-8 SSC). The final set scores on Saturday were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-14.
In set one, the Sharks gained the early momentum with starts of 4-0 and 9-2, and led by as many as nine (12-3 and 17-8). Though Rollins did cut it to four late at 22-18, they then committed a service error, which led to subsequent kills by seniors
Dana Holger (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and
Sydney Cook (Miami), sandwiched around a Tars' point, to close it out.
The second set had a similar outset, with three straight points to begin by the visitors, which eventually ballooned to a 7-1 NSU advantage. Down 9-4, Rollins did score the next three to cut it to two at 9-7, the closest either set had been to that point.
The Tars would later trail by just one at 16-15, but
Katie Pyles' (Jr., Denver) tip, followed by a block by she and
Caitlin Donahue (Sr., Miami), pushed it back to three. In fact, from then until the close of the set, the Sharks went on a 9-3 run, ended by a
Kaelyn Brock (So., La Quinta, Calif.) ace and a Rollins attack error, for a 2-0 lead.
NSU got a side-out to start the final set, and scored the next point for a 2-0 lead, looking for another quick start. However, Rollins got their first lead of the evening by scoring the next three. They led 4-3 as well, but the Sharks scored the next 14 to put their opposition in a gigantic hole, 17-4.
Denvyr Tyler-Palmer (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) was behind the service line 13 straight times, which included two aces, three kills from Holger, four blocks by Donahue, and both Rollins' timeouts.
After the run, the slimmest margin would be nine at 20-11 and 23-14. A kill by Tyler-Palmer, her game-high 14th of the night, and a Tars' attack error finished off the final set and the match sweep.
Tyler-Palmer notched her second double-double in as many nights with 11 digs. Holger was the only other player on either side with 10 or more kills, adding 12 for the victors. Also with a double-double on Saturday was Pyles with 31 assists and 15 digs, and libero
Megan Burns' (Fr., Sylvania, Ohio) 18 digs was the match high. Four Sharks combined for eight service aces, led by Tyler-Palmer's three, and two each by Burns and
Natalie Melcher (So., Rishon Letzion, Israel).
The final homestand of the season is next on the Shark schedule, with the team welcoming in Eckerd and Saint Leo to the NSU Arena next weekend. First up is the Tritons on Friday night, Nov. 13, at 7:30, with the Lions entering the Shark Tank at 4 p.m. the following day.
