No. 10 Women's Basketball Blitzes Miles by 53

Sharks shoot 30 percent better from the field than their opposition in rout

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 10 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team took the 2015 Shark Holiday Classic opener on Saturday in a rout, overwhelming Miles at the NSU Arena, 103-50.

The Sharks (10-1) went over the century mark for just the fourth time in program history, and second time this season, largely based on their reserves leading them to 31-7 margin in the fourth quarter. They shot 10-of-12 in the final 10 minutes, including a 5-of-6 mark from 3-point range, while making 6-of-7 free throws.

All told, NSU shot 53.3 percent from the field, made 12-of-24 from behind the arc, and held Miles (6-3) to just 23.8 shooting, by far the lowest by a Shark opponent this year. They also outrebounded the Lady Golden Bears 45-32, and had a 40-18 advantage on points in the paint. Ten Sharks combined to rack up 29 assists on the team's 32 made field goals.

Kayla Wright (Jr., Lauderhill, Fla.) led all scorers with 17 points, 12 in the third quarter alone, and was 6-of-10 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Taylor Buie (R-Jr., Puyallup, Wash.) and Ida Krogh (Sr., Aarhus, Denmark) each had 16; Buie made 4-of-6 3-pointers, while Krogh reached her career high in the first half, with 12 at that point. Buie added five assists while Krogh had three, along with four rebounds and two steals.

Also in double digits were Molly Blomer (Sr., West Chester Ohio), with three 3-pointers among her 11, and Sarah Kelly (Fr., Huntington, W.Va.) had 10, while also tying Monaye Merritt (R-Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) for the team's high with seven rebounds. Merritt also had seven assists and only committed a single turnover.

"Our entire team came ready to play and we executed the game plan well," said head coach LeAnn Freeland. "We are distributing the ball well and making extra passes, and defensively we did a good job limiting looks in the paint. Our ball pressure was much improved, and we trusted our help-side defense."

The aforementioned reserves combined for 47 points. Winter Rodriguez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) matched her season high with seven, while a quintet had six each: Katie Barnard (R-So., Granger, Ind.), Alexis Murphy (Sr., Carlisle, Ohio), Alexis Nunez (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Octavia Wilson (Jr., Nicholasville, Ky.). For the latter two, it set new career highs; Wilson hit two 3-pointers in the fourth, and for Nunez, the performance came in her Shark debut. In just four minutes, the 6-0 forward was 2-of-2 from the field and had three rebounds, and her old-fashioned three-point play put the Sharks at, and then over, 100.

Miles did not have a player in double digits in scoring, as Morgan Hardy was the top player with nine.

The Sharks play again on Sunday, finishing up their portion of the Holiday Classic against Albany State. Game time is at 2 p.m.
