Men’s Soccer Opens SSC Play With 4-0 Win Over Mocs

Sharks pour three of four goals on in final 11 minutes.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (3-1-0, 1-0-0 SSC) opened up Sunshine State Conference play with a shutout win over the Florida Southern Mocs (1-3-0, 0-1-0 SSC), 4-0, Wednesday at the NSU Soccer Complex.

The Sharks won on a game-winner from Filippo Mancini (So., Genova, Italy) in the 43rd minute. NSU also earned a goal from Faycal Oulahbib (Jr., Paris, France) and two from late sub Soma Gubacsi (Fr., Budapest, Hungary).

NSU began the match aggressively but struggled to find the back of the net. Two of the first four shots were on target, while the other two painted both sides of the post. The game-winner broke through just before halftime as a result of the Sharks' pressure in FSC's penalty box. Santiago Camacho (So., Bogota, Colombia) had a shot ricochet off the keeper to fellow sophomore Jacob Robbie (Plantation, Fla.). Robbie played the ball back to Mancini, who punched in his first goal at NSU.

The Mocs tried to answer right back a minute later but committed a hard foul on goalkeeper Taylor Bailey (Fr., Greeneville, Tenn.). Romain Voirin of FSC was issued a straight red card, which put the Mocs down a man. In the 64th minute, Jonathan Radvogin would receive his second yellow card, leading to another red that left FSC with nine men.

FSC played tough down the stretch, but NSU's attack eventually led to multiple goals. The second goal of the match came in the 79th minute on a play started by Mancini, who earned his second assist of the year. Mancini played a perfect ball to a streaking Stefano Fanfoni (Sr., Cremona, Italy), who's cross found Ouhlabib right in front of the goal for an easy score. Like Mancini's, it was Ouhlabib's first goal at NSU.

With 10 minutes remaining, NSU made mass subs, including reserves Gubacsi and freshman Jacob Sumaljag (North Port, Fla.). The pair of fresh forwards connected on goals in the 86th and 88th minutes. On both plays, Sumaljag took the ball up the left wing and played two great passes to Gubacsi, who finished perfectly from the right. With just 10 minutes of game time Wednesday, Gubacsi became NSU's first multiple-goal scorer this season.

In goal, Bailey made three saves on his way to his second straight shutout. The freshman has not allowed a goal since a penalty kick on Sept. 7 against West Alabama, logging over 205 straight shutout minutes.

The win broke a rough streak for the NSU men's soccer team. The Sharks had not won their SSC opener since the 2007 season, an overtime win against Saint Leo. At 4-0, the match was by far the largest margin of victory for NSU in a SSC opener.

The Sharks will look to take their momentum on the road Saturday when they play at Tampa at 6 p.m.
