FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (4-2-0) took down provisional Sunshine State Conference members, the Embry-Riddle Eagles (1-3-0), 2-1 on Wednesday at the NSU Soccer Complex.
The Sharks were lifted by a pair of goals from
Nate Bladecki (Fr., Troy, Mich.) and
Stefano Fanfoni (Sr., Cremona, Italy), each scoring their second goals of the season. The first goal came early in the eighth minute.
Flavio Devoto (So., Rome, Italy) played a ball into a crowded box that found Bladecki. The freshman fought off two defenders, before turning in and firing into the far right corner.
The lead would be short lived for NSU, as Embry-Riddle would equalize in the 13th minute. The Eagles answered NSU's goal aggressively and drew a foul just inside the top left corner of the penalty box. Magnus Magnusson stepped up for the penalty kick and put his team on the board. The Sharks would have a few more shots recorded before the break, but entered halftime with the score tied at one goal apiece.
The Sharks regained their lead in the 55th minute.
Faycal Oulahbib (Jr., Paris, France) started an attack from midfield and found a streaking Fanfoni. The senior accepted the ball from nearly 30 yards out and put a picture-perfect shot into the top right corner, far out of the reach of Eagles' goalkeeper. It was the seventh goal of the senior's career.
The Eagles only managed to fire off two shots in the second half, but one nearly put them back in the match. In the 79th minute, Joao Belmonte recovered a loose ball in the Sharks' penalty box. Ahead of keeper
Taylor Bailey (Fr., Greeneville, Tenn.), Belmonte looked to score in the open net, but a slide-in from a Shark defender deflected the ball just enough for it to touch the post and stay out.
NSU almost scored on the final shot of the game from
Caue Munareti Rodrigues (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the 86th minute, but Embry-Riddle's Jeff Bone earned his third save of the match. Overall, NSU recorded 13 shots, with five on target. Fanfoni led NSU with six strikes. Bailey made a pair of saves and still has not allowed a goal in the run of play since the first half on Sept. 7 against West Alabama.
NSU will begin a four-match road trip on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Ave Maria Gyrenes.
