Men’s Soccer Aims to Take Down Champs at Lynn

Sharks face Fighting Knights Wednesday at 7 p.m.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (5-2-0, 1-1-0 SSC) will take on the defending NCAA National Champions, the Lynn Fighting Knights (2-1-2, 0-1-1 SSC), in Boca Raton, Florida Wednesday.

The Sharks enter the match winners of four of their last five matches, including back-to-back 2-1 victories over Embry-Riddle and Ave Maria. Senior Stefano Fanfoni (Cremona, Italy) scored the game-winner in each match, first on a 30-yard bomb against the Eagles and most recently on a 90th-minute free kick.

The pair of wins gives NSU five wins in seven matches, the fastest the program has reached that mark since 2008, a year in which the Sharks ranked as high as ninth in the nation. A win on Wednesday would give NSU its best eight-match start since 2007, the year the Sharks won their first seven matches to march their way to No. 2 in the nation.

The Fighting Knights entered the season as the top-ranked team in the nation after winning the 2014 national title. The team returned SSC Player of the Year Chris Hellman, who already has 10 goals in 2015. After defeating their first two opponents, Delta State and Colorado Christian, by a combined score of 17-0, Lynn has gone 0-1-2. The loss came at home against Saint Leo, 3-1, while Palm Beach Atlantic and Barry both earned draws.

Last season, the Sharks struggled against the Fighting Knights. Lynn won the regular season league match and ended the Sharks' year in the Sunshine State Conference semifinals, 2-0. However, NSU has given Lynn fits in recent years, including a 4-1 win in 2013 and a 1-0 victory in 2012, when the Fighting Knights were ranked No. 1 in the nation.
