BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (5-3-0, 1-2-0 SSC) faced the defending NCAA National Championships, the Lynn Fighting Knights (3-1-2, 1-1-1 SSC), on the road Wednesday and fell, 3-1.
NSU had an unbelievable start, scoring in the second minute of the match. Freshman
Jacob Sumaljag (North Port, Fla.) scored the first goal of his career in the opening moment. The run came on the first attack for NSU.
Filippo Mancini (So., Genova, Italy) earned his team-leading third assist by finding Sumaljag in the box from the left side. Sumaljag received a pinpoint pass and scored the opening goal after one touch from the right.
Down a goal, the Fighting Knights played the first half with urgency and took the fight to NSU. The Sharks looked as if they would be tied in the 17th minute, when a foul on the right side of the penalty box was called. Chris Hellman, the reigning Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year, missed the PK wide left after
Taylor Bailey (Fr., Greeneville, Tenn.) guessed right.
Hellman would eventually score his nation-leading 11th goal in the 31st minute to tie the match. Hellman took a perfect cross and fired in goal from point-blank range. Four minutes later, Hellman earned an assist on a free kick, finding Luca Puster on a header from left of goal. The Sharks had two shots on goal over the final 10 minutes of the half but entered the break down a goal.
NSU came out strong again in the second half, and nearly equalized on a free kick from the top of the box in the 49th minute.
Caue Munareti Rodrigues (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) went right for goal but was just wide left on the attempt. Lynn posted their third goal in the 63rd minute, with Sebastian Schulz scoring for the Fighting Knights.
Over the final 30 minutes, NSU kept attacking and forced Lynn to make a pair of saves. In the end, NSU registered nine attempts at goal, five of which were on target. Bailey finished the match with a career-high eight saves.
Halfway through a four-match road trip, NSU travels to No. 5 Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday at 7 p.m.
