FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 10 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team outscored Saint Leo 28-13 in the final quarter, enabling them to defeat the Lions on Saturday at the NSU Arena, 79-64.
The Sharks (16-2, 8-1 SSC) and Lions (4-14, 1-8 SSC) were tied entering the fourth, 51-51, but the home team scored the first 12 of the frame to never look back. Included in the run was an old-fashioned three-point play by
Taylor Buie (R-Jr., Puyallup, Wash.), and a 3-pointer by
Ida Krogh (R-Sr., Aarhus, Denmark).
The margin would be double digits the rest of the way.
Molly Blomer (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) came through with five straight points, while Buie scored five more as well, leaving her just four points shy of 1,000 in her career.
The Sharks were 9-of-17 in the final frame and, besides holding the Lions scoreless for the first 3:48, forced them into 12 total missed shots.
Blomer paced the team with 18, making 6-of-12 shots and four 3-pointers. Buie added 17, and
Kayla Wright (Jr., Lauderhill, Fla.) 10.
Katie Barnard (R-So., Granger, Ind.) matched both of her career bests with nine points and seven rebounds, and Krogh equaled her teammate with nine points as well.
All told, the NSU bench outscored their Lion counterparts 42-15, and the team as a whole shot 50 percent in the game while holding Saint Leo to 38.8 percent (and 2-of-13 shooting from behind the arc). Chelsy Springs led the Lions with 19 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
NSU is back on the road next Wednesday, traveling just north to Boca Raton to take on Lynn. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
