WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – For the second straight year, the No. 12 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team suffered a loss at the Rubin Arena, as Palm Beach Atlantic used a 26-15 advantage in the final frame to win 88-73.
The Sailfish (9-10) shot 56.9 percent in the game and, in addition to the final margin, also had a healthy halftime lead at 49-37. However, the Sharks (17-3) battled back in the third, outscoring PBA 21-13 to cut it to four heading into the fourth.
Behind three 20-plus scorers, a 20-5 run to start the last quarter pretty well put the game away for the home team. The win came despite the scoring efforts of Shark juniors
Taylor Buie (Puyallup, Wash.) and
Kayla Wright (Lauderhill, Fla.).
Buie made her first six 3-pointers of the afternoon and eight overall (just one shy of the school single-game mark) for 24 points. Wright had 23 on 10-of-17 shooting, and added 13 rebounds, a career-best, for her first collegiate double-double.
Next for NSU was
Ida Krogh (R-Sr., Aarhus, Denmark) with nine,
Sarah Kelly's (Fr., Huntington, W.Va.) eight, and
Monaye Merritt (R-Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.), who had seven. Merritt and
Molly Blomer (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) each had four assists, with Merritt adding three steals.
Janelle Cannon took game honors with 29 points for PBA, along with 13 rebounds. Hannah Grim scored 22 and Ayanna Holmes also had a double-double in the win with 21 points and 10 boards.
The Sharks head back into conference play this upcoming Wednesday night at home, hosting Florida Tech at 5:30 p.m.
