FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Nova Southeastern volleyball team evened the season series with Barry University with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night in the NSU Arena. With the win, NSU improves to 11-8 overall and an even 3-3 in league play, while Barry falls to an overall 9-8 and 2-4 in the SSC.
With her 31 assists,
Katie Pyles becomes the new No. 2 in career assists with a total of 3,307, passing the 13-year-old record of 3,302 set by Lyndsey Metts. Pyles also recorded her second triple-double in three matches, with 13 kills and 11 digs.
Jessica Ronyak registered a double-double with her 15 kills and 10 digs and
Natalie Melcher added six blocks, five of which were solo, a career high.
A slow start resulted in the Sharks falling behind early, dropping the first set, 25-23, to the visiting Bucs. Barry jumped out to an 8-4 lead and never turned back. Down 24-20, the Sharks attempted to rally, coming within one point (24-23) but a kill by BU's Eva Raat halted NSU and finished the set.
It was NSU who grabbed the lead early in set two, but at 11-8, the Bucs took off on a six-point run to steal the lead away and grab a 14-11 advantage. The Sharks quickly turned around the momentum and went on a 7-1 run to take back the lead and go up 18-15. NSU continued to control the end of the set, and eventually ended up on top, 25-21.
Set three was a close battle between the two teams, seeing four lead changes and 11 total ties. Knotted at 17-17, the Sharks used a six-point streak to grab a 23-18 advantage. After going back and forth for a couple points, a kill by Ronyak pushed the Sharks to a 25-19 win, and NSU went ahead 2-1 in the overall match.
The Sharks used back-to-back errors by the Bucs in set four to take a 2-0 lead and never surrendered. At 6-5, the Sharks utilized four errors by Barry and a kill by
Tashalyn Begon to grab an 11-5 advantage, their largest lead of the set. Down 22-18, Barry tried to force the match to five sets, coming within one (22-21) but back to back errors committed by the visitors and a kill by Pyles secured NSU's 25-21 win and overall 3-1 victory.
Nova Southeastern will hit the road again this weekend to see a fresh couple of faces in Tampa and Saint Leo. The Sharks will take on the No. 20 Spartans on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. before facing off against the Lions on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. For live stats and video, head to NSUSharks.com.
