Sharks Control Second Half, Settle for 0-0 Draw

NSU’s unbeaten streak moves to nine Wednesday night

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Wednesday was one of those nights where regardless of how many scoring chances 14th-ranked Nova Southeastern created, the Sharks just couldn't crack the back line defense of Barry. Despite outshooting the Buccaneers by a 16-4 margin after halftime, Nova Southeastern was forced to settle for a scoreless 0-0 double overtime draw and now sits at 9-1-3, 4-0-2 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Keeper Ida Norstrom tallied yet another shutout in the effort after recording three saves to give the Sharks, who remain just one point out of the top spot in the SSC race, their fifth consecutive home shutout for the first time since 2010.

The Sharks opened the match a bit sluggish and nearly payed for it in the 13th minute when a turnover deep in their own half handed Barry a one-on-one opportunity with Norstrom. However, the shot attempt sailed well high to keep the contest deadlocked at 0-0.

Overall, the Bucs registered nine shots in the first 45 minutes as opposed to just six from Nova Southeastern.

After the break, though, the Sharks kept the Barry defense plenty busy. Nova Southeastern appeared ready to jump ahead in the 50th minute, but Nichole Poppe's vicious strike deflected off the crossbar. The rebound eventually caromed to Myriah Troutman for another chance, but her volley was turned away by Barry's Paula Forero to keep the Sharks off the scoreboard.

Poppe again drew iron in the 70th minute, but to no avail as the match soon headed into extra time.

In the first overtime period, Nova Southeastern kept its foot on the gas pedal, anxious to pick up the result against the reigning SSC Tournament champions. Poppe sent one of the Shark's 12 corner kicks into the box in the 96th minute, where Sini Laaksonen zeroed in on a golden header opportunity. Continuing the theme for the night, though, Barry's defense showed up in the nick of time and deflected the would-be score before clearing the ball out of danger.

Poppe registered a season-high 11 shots throughout the game, nearly equaling Barry's overall team total of 13.
