BURNABY, B.C. – Despite a 27-point effort by
Megan Piggott, the Nova Southeastern women's basketball team suffered a 76-56 loss to the Simon Fraser Clan on Monday afternoon in British Columbia, Canada. The loss drops NSU to an overall record of 8-4 while SFU moves to 10-2.
Piggott went 8-of-16 from the field and connected on 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, and added the rest of her points from 8-of-9 shooting from the stripe. She also added four rebounds and two steals.
Cheray Saunders was the next highest scorer, recording nine points as well as two assists and steals.
Samantha Logan led the team with six boards and
Amanda Tivenius chipped in seven points.
The home squad outshot the Sharks 44.6 percent to 37.5 percent from the field, and also held the advantage in rebounding, 40-29.
The Clan jumped out of the gates in the first, grabbing a 7-0 lead at the 5:34 mark. The Sharks were able to come within five (13-8) before SFU tallied seven straight points for a 20-8 lead. Back-to-back threes by Saunders and Piggott closed the gap to six points (20-14) as the quarter expired.
A 12-3 run by SFU to start the second quarter gave the home team its largest lead yet, 15 points (32-17) until Piggott scored eight in a row for the Sharks. A pair of made free throws by Saunders cut the deficit to eight points (35-27), and would be the closest NSU would get for the remainder of the game.
The third quarter saw the Sharks put up the most points of any frame, but the Clan continued to outscore NSU to put even more of a padding to their lead. In the final frame, both teams were held to a mere 23.1 percent, but Simon Fraser used a 6-0 run to grab its largest lead of the game (68-45) en route to its eventual 76-56 victory.
The Sharks will return home for its final game of 2016, when it will host SSC provisional member, Embry-Riddle, on Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m. For live coverage and all things NSU basketball, head to NSUSharks.com.
