Sharks Score 20 Runs, One-Hit Tuskegee

Zardon, Hernandez and Gomez go deep on Friday night.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (4-5) trounced the Tuskegee Golden Tigers (2-6) on Friday night, scoring 20 runs on 22 hits and one-hitting the visitors from Alabama. Alex Mateo earned the win, striking out 10 batters and no-hitting the Golden Tigers for 6.2 innings.
 
The Sharks got things started in the bottom of the first inning, scoring five runs on five hits. Kevin Suarez led the inning with a single, advanced to second, stole third and scored on a throwing error. Sebastian Diaz then doubled, scoring Danny Zardon and Brandon Gomez. Hernandez followed with a double to left centerfield, driving in Diaz and Austin Pereira.
 
NSU scored two more in the bottom of the second inning on RBI-singles from Zardon and Gomez. In the third inning, the Cintron smacked a two-RBI double down the left field line to give the Sharks a 9-0 lead. Gomez and Zardon then went back-to-back, crushing two baseball over the left field fence to give the Sharks a 12-0 lead.
 
After scoring another run in the fourth, the Sharks piled on four more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a Diaz RBI-double and a three-run home run off of the bat of Michael Hernandez. NSU tacked on three more runs in the sixth and seventh, led by a Brendan Cutting RBI and Julian Pino RBI.
 
Thomas Barberi made his Shark debut, striking out two batters in the eighth inning. Gomez, Zardon, Diaz and Hernandez each tallied three hits in the game, while Cutting earned his first hit as a Shark and Kavan Thompson and Pino garnered their first hits of 2016.
