No. 14 Women's Basketball Posts Overtime Win in Winter Park

Sharks outscore Rollins 12-2 to wrap up road matchup

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Taylor Buie and Ida Krogh each scored six points as part of a 12-2 game-ending run as the No. 14 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team escaped the Alfond Sports Center with an overtime win over Rollins on Saturday, 70-64.

The game's 13th lead change saw the Sharks (19-3, 11-1 SSC) go up by three with 1:17 to go in regulation, after back-to-back layups. Down 55-54, Molly Blomer (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) hit a circus shot underneath with 1:49 left, then Monaye Merritt (R-Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) immediately stole away the ensuing in-bound, and about 30 seconds later, hit a layin of her own.

Rollins (9-11, 4-7 SSC) came back to knot it up (the 15th tie of the afternoon) with a Tanaya Jones runner with 56 seconds left, followed by her hitting 1-of-2 free throws with just 11.5 to go. The Sharks' last-second attempt to win caromed off, sending it into additional time.

The Tars carried the momentum of those last three points with the first four of overtime as well. It was 62-58 after a Jones jumper at 4:09 and two Marie Gilbert free throws with 3:24 to go.

The comeback began with a Krogh (R-Sr., Aarhus, Denmark) layup at 2:34, with the Sharks then forcing a subsequent Tar miss, rebounded by Katie Barnard (R-So., Granger, Ind.). That would actually be the first of what would eventually be seven straight misses by the home team.

Buie (R-Jr., Puyallup, Wash.) hit her first big shot at 1:24, just her second made 3-pointer of the game to regain the lead. After another errant Rollins jumper, it was Buie again, from the left wing, extending the margin to four at 51 seconds with yet another '3.'

Krogh cemented the road win with 4-of-4 free throws over the last 18 seconds. Rollins only dented the scoreboard with two from the stripe of their own, meaning they didn't hit a field goal for the final 4:09 of the game.

Merritt was the team leader in points with 18, scoring six in the third quarter and eight in the fourth. She also had a team-best nine rebounds and four steals. Kayla Wright (Jr., Lauderhill, Fla.) scored 17, eight coming in the second, as part of a sizzling 8-of-10 mark for the team in that period.

Buie and Krogh each ended the game with 13, with Krogh making all nine of her free throws, the best line without a miss for a Shark this season. She also had seven rebounds.

Gilbert was the Tars' high scorer with 19, and Jones added 18.

The Sharks' next matchup is back home at the NSU Arena, this Wednesday vs. Tampa. They will try to avenge this season's 71-45 loss to Spartans, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
