CLERMONT, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team (8-18, 1-8 SSC) picked up a 3-2 extra inning win over Bentley University (0-4) followed by a 6-1 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College (2-5) in team's last day at the NTC Spring Games on Sunday afternoon.
The first game against Bentley was a nailbiter as the Sharks held the lead until the top of the seventh. NSU would come out victorious in the bottom of the eighth as
Dajia Jones (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) hit a RBI single to bring in
Dakota Villella (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) and win the game.
Megan Granitto (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) moved to 3-4 on the season giving up six hits, one earned run, two walks and picking up two strikeouts in the win. Michelle Devito (0-1) took the loss in her first game of the season for the Falcons.
"I am very pleased with the way Megan is performing pitching-wise at this point," said head coach
Julie LeMaire. "Megan has been very reliable in the circle. She has done a great job of minimizing walks and getting groundouts and popups to keep opposing hitters off the board."
The Sharks' were dominant on both offense and defense against St. Thomas Aquinas as Jones (3-7) pitched her second two-hitter of the season giving up one earned run with one strikeout and going 3-for-4 with her fourth home run of the year and two RBI. NSU had 11 hits as Granitto and
Haley Gonzales (So., Boca Raton, Fla.) both went 2-for-4 with one RBI apiece.
"Dajia also had a great outing today on the mound as well as offensively" added LeMaire. "She has continued to be a driving force in our offense, and it was fun to see some bursts of power out of her this weekend."
Game 1The Sharks first score came off a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning from Jones. The team would tack on another run in the bottom of the fourth as
Jessie Brown (So., Hollywood, Fla.) hit a RBI single to center field to score Jones.
The Falcons answered with a RBI single by Alex Borrelli in the next inning. They would then tie things up in the top of the seventh off another single by Borrelli to take the game into extra innings. NSU's defense would strand a Bentley runner on base in the top of the eighth and Villella would score the Sharks' winning run off a single by Jones.
Game 2 The game was scoreless until the top of the third when the NSU hits began.
Katey Blummer (Jr., Naples, Fla.) reached first on a fielding error by the Spartans' shortstop. With her third home run of the weekend, Jones drove in Blummer to put the Sharks up 2-0.
St. Thomas Aquinas scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth, but the top of the fifth would see NSU's final four runs off of five hits and a Spartan error. Villella started the inning reaching first on catcher's interference. Granitto drove her in off a triple to right center. Blummer followed that up with a double to left center to score Granitto. Blummer would be driven in by a Gonzales double to left. Gonzales advanced to third after
Sophia Devesa (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit a single to left field. Brown got her first hit of the game to plate Gonzales for the team's final run.
The Sharks will be back home at the A.D. Griffin Sports Complex to host a doubleheader against Columbus State on Wednesday, March 16 starting at 5 p.m.
