FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University softball (11-22, 1-11 SSC) swept Albany State University (10-20) on Tuesday night winning the first game 7-4 and taking the second 15-4 in five innings.
Megan Granitto (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) was outstanding on the night, going 5-for-7 with six RBI and five runs scored over both games and was one short of the cycle in the first contest. She now leads the team in RBI with 24. Granitto (5-5) also got the win in the circle in game one giving up five hits, two earned runs and picking up one strikeout. Ambrionna Atkism (4-6) got the loss for the Lady Rams allowing 10 hits and three walks.
Dajia Jones (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) picked up her fourth win of the season in five innings pitched allowing five hits, one earned run and four strikeouts. Jones was also impressive at the plate going 5-for-8 with two RBI and three runs scored combined. She is second in the conference in hits with 40 on the season. Taylor Clemens (0-1) took the defeat for ASU pitching two innings and giving up seven hits, 11 runs and two walks.
Game 1The Sharks scored first with two runs in the bottom of the first off of singles by Granitto and Jones, a RBI sacrifice fly from
Katey Blummer (Jr., Naples, Fla.) and a fielder's choice bunt by
Haley Gonzales (So., Boca Raton, Fla.). The Lady Rams replied with a run of their own in the top of the second off of two hits and a Shark error.
A two-out RBI triple from Granitto would score
Dakota Villella (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) in the bottom of the second and put NSU up 3-1. ASU closed the gap with one run in the top of the fourth.
With her third hit of the game, Granitto blasts a solo home run out of left field to start the bottom of the fifth. Jones follows that up with a single and Gonzales walks.
Jessie Brown (So., Hollywood, Fla.) comes up with her first hit of the night, a double to center field, to bring in Jones and Gonzales and widen the score to 6-2.
The Lady Rams saw their third score in the top of the sixth off a Brishanti Weaver double and RBI sac fly by Toni Coleman. The Sharks answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Villella had an infield single, stole second and crossed the plate off of a single by Blummer. ASU would score their fourth and final run in the top of the seventh, but it would not be enough to take the win.
Game 2The second game saw a combined 15 hits from the Sharks. NSU came out strong with four runs in the bottom of the first. It began with Villella walking and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Granitto singled and both her and Villella advanced on the throw back into the infield. Blummer reached on a fielding error by the ASU shortstop, which would score Villella. Jones came up with a big double to right center to plate Granitto and move Blummer to third.
Sophia Devesa (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) then hits a sac fly to bring in Blummer and Jones scored the fourth run on a wild pitch.
Jadae Taylor would drive in two of the Lady Rams' four runs off a two-out single in the top of the second. The final two were seen in the top of the third off a double to left center by Atkism.
The bottom of the third was very productive for the Sharks as they saw seven runs off of five hits and three ASU errors. Granitto started things off by reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman and advanced to third after Blummer doubled to left center. Jones singled to score Granitto and move Blummer to third. ASU pitcher Clemens loaded the bases with no outs by walking Gonzales. Devesa picked up a two-RBI single to bring around Blummer and Jones. Gonzales came home on a fielding error as did Devesa. Villella then saw a RBI single to score Brown, which prompted ASU to put in Atkism to pitch for Clemens. Brown would score the last run of the inning when Granitto flied out to center field to take NSU up 11-4.
The last four runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth. Brown saw her second hit of the game with one out.
Sabrina Fischer (Fr., Loxahatchee, Fla.) took first on a fielder's choice and was moved over by a single from
Ashley Roe (Jr., Flower Mound, Texas). Villella, who is second in the conference in walks (23) got her second walk of the game to load them up. Again coming through for the Sharks, Granitto doubled to left center to clear the bases. Blummer also picked up a double to score Granitto.
