FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Winners of two straight in the series against Florida Southern, Nova Southeastern will eye similar success when both clubs clash in their respective Sunshine State Conference openers Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
Dating back to 2014, the Sharks have outscored the Moccasins by a combined 7-1 margin, including a 4-0 shutout at the NSU Soccer Complex a season ago. Midfielder
Soma Gubacsi led the attack with two goals in the effort, while
Filippo Mancini added a goal and an assist. The Nova Southeastern backline played its part as well, limiting Florida Southern to just three shots on goal and only five overall.
The Sharks offense will be searching for that same type of jolt this time around following a relatively slow start through the first two weeks of the season. Head coach
Matt Watts' team picked up consecutive 1-0 wins over St. Thomas (Fla.) and West Alabama, but recently found itself on the short end of a 2-0 shutout this past Sunday against Johnson & Wales.
Juanes Devia and
Noel Johnson are currently tied for the team lead with one goal apiece. However, outside of the aforementioned duo, the remainder of the Sharks' roster has yet to accumulate a point.
Fresh off a 4-1 victory at Coker, Florida Southern enters Wednesday on a high note but has struggled with consistency thus far in 2016. In their two wins this season, the Mocs have tallied a total of nine goals. Yet, in its lone loss to Mars Hill, Florida Southern managed just one score with three total shots on goal.
A pair of freshmen in Jacob Ling-Vannerus and Florian Thumm have helped lead the charge for the Mocs. The two forwards have each recorded two goals, while Thumm has also added two assists in his first three career appearances.
