FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Putting the non-conference portion of its schedule on the back burner for a bit, Nova Southeastern will look to remain perfect at the NSU Soccer Complex when it opens its Sunshine State Conference slate against Florida Southern Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
The Sharks displayed a great bounce-back effort just two days after suffering their first loss of the season, earning a decisive 2-0 victory over Mississippi College this past Sunday. Following a scoreless first half, freshman
Emma Heikkila pumped in her first two career goals to ensure Nova Southeastern's fourth win in five tries to begin the year.
In addition to the play of Heikkila, the Sharks' early season charge has been largely predicated on the performance of fellow freshman
Ida Norstrom. Through the first four matches of Norstrom's collegiate career, the young keeper has recorded three clean sheets and yielded just two goals altogether. Following her latest shutout over the Choctaws, the native of Oslo, Norway now ranks third in the league with a notable 0.540 goals-against average.
Florida Southern, meanwhile, had the start to its 2016 campaign delayed an extra week following back-to-back postponements. However, the Moccasins have since registered a 1-1 draw at Spring Hill and a 2-1 defeat on the road versus West Florida – the latter leaving a sour taste in the mouth of new head coach Siggi Nagele's club.
Knotted up at 1-1 in the waning moments of regulation, the Argonauts' Sara Helgadottir sucked the wind right out of Florida Southern by notching the game-winner with just four seconds remaining.
The Mocs' leader in goals and points a year ago, Anna Griessler has shown anything but signs of a sophomore slump in the early stages, accounting for both of FSC's goals thus far in 2016.
Each of the last five meetings between the Sharks and Mocs have been decided by one goal or less, including a 3-2 overtime win for NSU on the road back in 2014.
