FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The NSU men's soccer team fell, 2-0, to the Choctaws of Mississippi College on Friday night in their home opener.
With this match serving as the first game for either team, MC moves to 1-0 on the season, while NSU falls to 0-1.
Despite the score, the Sharks had a strong offensive outing, outshooting MC 15-6 overall. NSU also edged the Choctaws in shots on goal, 5-4.
Mississippi found the net early, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Jacob Farthing sent an unassisted goal past NSU's
Nico Rosiglioni.
Filippo Mancini and
Viktor Jonsson both had chances to put NSU on the board halfway through the first half, but outstanding saves by MC's starting goalkeeper, Humberto Pelaez, prevented either of the tying goals.
In the 67th minute, MC's Marco Profumo beat both of his defenders to notch another unassisted goal for the Choctaws, pushing them ahead, 2-0, and tallying the last score of the game for either team.
Pelaez went the distance in goal for MC, making five saves with no goals allowed in all 90 minutes, earning his first win of the year.
Rosiglioni took the loss, making two saves in all 90 minutes in goal for the Sharks.
NSU will hit the pitch again on Sept. 6 as they travel to Miami Gardens to take on host St. Thomas University at 7:00 pm.
