Sharks Unable to Withstand Three-Point Barrage, Fall to No. 7 Barry

Bucs hit 19 three-pointers to beat NSU 77-63 Saturday

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern limited Sunshine State Conference leading scorer Adrian Gonzalez to just five points, yet a barrage of 19 three-pointers lifted No. 7 Barry past the Sharks 77-63 Saturday night at Rick Case Arena.

Although Gonzalez was held well below his season average of 22.1 points per game, point guard Elvar Fridriksson picked up the slack for the Buccaneers with a game-high 20 points and seven assists to go along with 15 points – all in the first half – from sophomore Sawyer Glick off the bench.

Dwayne Gibson led the way for the Sharks, filling up the stat sheet with 15 points, six rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Both Harrison Goodrick and Gerard Tarin chipped in with 13 points apiece, while Nikita Orap scored in double-figures for the third straight contest with 11 points in 21 minutes of action.

Nova Southeastern held Barry scoreless for the opening four minutes and jumped out to a quick 6-0 advantage. However, following their drought to start the ball game, the Bucs drained six triples over a five-minute span to climb ahead 20-11 at the 10:56 mark of the first half.

Despite shooting just 33.3 percent from the floor, Barry went on to drill 10 treys in the opening 20 minutes to grab a 35-23 cushion at the break.

The Sharks had their fair share of opportunities to cut into the Bucs' lead, but converted only 5-of-12 from the free throw line in the first half before they eventually wound up making 14-of 24 overall from the charity stripe on the night.

Head coach Gary Tuell's club hung around throughout the start of the second half, trailing 53-42 midway through the period following a triple from Goodrick. The three by the senior sparked what resulted in a 14-2 as Goodrick then cut the deficit to single digits on lay-up on the ensuing possession before Gibson drilled one of his two three-point field goals in the effort to cut the margin to 53-47.

The Sharks narrowed the gap to as close as four with 6:31 to play, but Fridriksson landed the final dagger from deep with under two minutes remaining to eliminate any shot of a comeback victory against the nation's seventh-ranked team.

Now at 5-12 overall and 2-8 in the SSC, NSU will return to the court at home on Wednesday against the Spartans of Tampa. For complete coverage of the action, log onto NSUSharks.com or follow the Sharks on Twitter @NSU_MBasketball.
