LAKELAND, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team earned a 53-48 win over the Florida Southern Moccasins on Saturday evening thanks to double-double performances by
Samantha Logan and
Christen Prasse. The Sharks improve to 13-7 overall and 9-3 against Sunshine State Conference opponents while the Mocs fall to 12-7 and 8-3 in the league.
The majority of the game was a nail biter, as both teams stayed within five points of each other until the final frame, when the Sharks pulled away in the final five and a half minutes to seal the victory. Overall, the game saw 10 lead changes and six ties.
The game was slow to start, as both teams struggled from the field. NSU held a three-point lead (6-3) after a layup by
Maria Bardeeva, but a five-point run by the Mocs gave them an 8-6 advantage heading into the second.
Despite being out-shot by FSC in the second, three triples by Logan cut the deficit to just one point in favor of the home team heading into the break. Down four with 2:43 left in the frame, Logan hit her third three to come within one point, 16-15, but the Mocs were quick to respond, grabbing another four-point advantage with less than two minutes remaining. A foul called on FSC sent Prasse to the line, where she split a pair of free throws, and a minute later at the buzzer, she hit a layup to close the gap to just a point (19-18).
An
Amanda Tivenius layup kicked off the scoring in the third, as NSU took back the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 20-19. The next four minutes saw seven lead changes and two ties, until FSC took back the lead and held on for the rest of the frame, going into the fourth quarter with a 38-35 edge.
The fourth quarter was all Sharks, as the visiting team on the scoreboard connected on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, tallying 18 points (the most of any frame). Down 44-41 with 5:44 left to go, another three-pointer by Logan, her fifth of the game, and a pair of free throws by Prasse sparked a Sharks comeback, as NSU took back the lead and never looked back. Nova Southeastern outscored the Mocs 7-4 in the final four minutes to secure their 53-48 win.
Logan and Prasse were the night's leading scorers, each recording a double-double with 15 points and 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Prasse also chipped in four assists. Tivenius joined the pair in double-digits with 10 points, and pulled down four boards.
The Sharks will continue on the road as they travel to West Palm Beach, Fla. to take on Palm Beach Atlantic in the series finale. Earlier this season at the Rick Case Arena, NSU kicked off SSC play with the Sailfish by earning a whopping 94-56 win. For live coverage, head to NSUSharks.com.
