Sharks Shake Slow Start, Beat Lynn 2-1

NSU now just one win away from SSC regular season title

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – No. 25 Nova Southeastern overcame an early deficit with two unanswered goals before fending off a late Lynn charge to seal the 2-1 victory Wednesday night over the Fighting Knights. The win erased the Sharks' previous two-game losing streak, now moving them within one win from the Sunshine State Conference regular season title.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lynn stunned the Shark faithful less than three minutes in when Emily Weisburg slipped behind the Nova Southeastern defense and delivered a chip shot over keeper Jordan Lentz for the match's first score.
  • The Sharks showed no signs of panic, though, and responded in the 11th minute on Bailey Corbin's third goal of the season. Awarded a corner kick, Monica Orteu sent a bending ball towards the box before a Gabriela Alfaro deflection was cleaned up by Corbin for the quick equalizer.
  • Nova Southeastern nearly grabbed its first lead of the night in the 18th minute after Adanna Edwards set up Hannah Christophe for a one-on-one opportunity in front of the net. However, a stellar diving save by Lynn keeper Alexa Downie kept the match knotted at 1-1.
  • Just moments before halftime whistle, this time it was Christophe linking up with Edwards, as the speedy freshman corralled the long ball from Christophe and powered a right-footed attempt past the outstretched arms of Downie for the go-ahead goal.
  • Still clinging to the 2-1 edge, the Sharks found themselves with their backs against the wall down the stretch. Yet, each of the Fighting Knights' four shots over the final 20 minutes were turned away, as Nova Southeastern eventually prevailed.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • Corbin has now recorded two goals in the last three matches after entering the season with just one to her credit during the previous two years combined.
  • Edwards' fifth goal moved her into a tie for fifth in the league for most goals scored this season.
  • The Sharks finished the night with a narrow 15-14 advantage in the shot department.
  • Lentz collected four saves in the effort, picking up her ninth win of the year in the process

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Following the "W', Nova Southeastern has compiled a 12-2-2 record in its last 16 matches against Lynn.
  • Assists by both Christophe and Orteu now gives the Nova Southeastern four players with double-digit points.
  • The Sharks have still yet to lose this season (11-0-1) when tallying at least two goals in a match.
