FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Tallying a season-high amount of points for the second straight game, the Nova Southeastern women's basketball team served the visiting Shaw University Bears an 85-59 loss on Tuesday afternoon in the Rick Case Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1ST QUARTER | NSU showed no mercy in the first minutes of the game, jumping out to a 10-2 lead at the 6:56 mark. Sparked by a pair of free throws by
Maria Bardeeva, the Sharks went on to outscore the Bears 16-2 to close out the first quarter with an overwhelming 26-6 advantage. In total, the Bears were 3-of-19 (15.8 percent) from the field.
2ND QUARTER | Shaw's offense finally woke up in the second quarter, tallying 22 points compared to six in the first, but wouldn't come more than within 19 points from the Sharks throughout the frame.
Alison Hughes was unstoppable from beyond the arc, tallying all nine of her points from deep, with her first coming within the first five seconds of the quarter. With three seconds remaining before the break,
Kayla Wright, assisted by
Skyla Osceola, used a lay in to push the Sharks to a 23-point advantage, 51-28.
3RD QUARTER | The two teams were back and forth with scoring in the third, until the final two minutes when the Sharks took off on a 9-0 run. The Bears cut the deficit to 17 points (61-44), the closest they would come, at the 2:37 mark, serving as the last time they would score in the quarter. Hughes tallied her sixth trey of the night at the buzzer, sending NSU into the final frame with a 72-44 lead.
4TH QUARTER | A layup by Wright to kick off the fourth gave Nova Southeastern its largest lead of the game, 74-44, before Shaw would respond with an 11-5 run, their biggest of the game. Hughes' last three of the game at the 3:39 mark put NSU out in front 82-55, and the Sharks went on to end up on top, 85-59.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Hughes led all players with a career-high 28 points, capitalizing on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and 7-of-13 from three-point range. She also added four steals and four rebounds.
- Three other Sharks put up double-digits, as Wright tallied 17 on perfect 7-of-7 shooting, while Cheray Saunders and Amanda Tivenius each added 10 points apiece.
- Tivenius completed the double-double, chipping in a game-high 11 boards, while Wright added seven of her own. Saunders added six assists and three steals.
- Skyla Osceola also recorded a game-high nine assists, with seven rebounds as well.
- Bardeeva also provided four assists.
- NSU took advantage of their speed, putting up 19 fast-break points, compared to Shaw's eight.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Hughes' career high 28 points served as the most any Shark has scored this season. Same goes for Tivenius' rebounds (11) and Osceola's assists (9).
- Hughes' seven 3-pointers were the most for any Shark since Jan. 30, 2016, and also ties her for third all-time in an individual game.
- Tonight's win bring the overall series between Shaw and Nova Southeastern to 9-3 in NSU's favor.
