Sharks Run Out of Gas in Second Half Against Embry-Riddle

NSU falls 80-59 on road Wednesday night

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Nova Southeastern owned a three-point edge at halftime Wednesday night, but was unable to make that lead stand as the Sharks were eventually upended 80-59 on the road at Embry-Riddle.

Dwayne Gibson logged another strong effort in the defeat, finishing with 20 points to pace the Sharks offensively. Freshman Carl Alenfall recorded a season-high 11 points in his second straight start, while Harrison Goodrick notched his seventh double-double with 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds – 14 of those coming in the first half.

Gibson tallied 12 of his points in the first half, but it was Alenfall's coming out party that ignited the Sharks down the stretch of the opening period. Trailing 26-21 with 4:38 left prior to the break, Alenfall keyed a 9-0 spurt with back-to-back three pointers to put Nova Southeastern in front before taking a 34-31 advantage heading into the locker room.

However, after limiting the Eagles' high-powered offense to just 33.3 percent shooting in the first half, head coach Steve Ridder's club caught fire en route to a 62 percent display over the course of the final 20 minutes.

A Dalton Barnes lay-in stretched Embry-Riddle's lead to seven at the 11:04 mark of the second half. Moments later, that margin grew to double-digits following one of the Eagles' nine treys in the contest. From there, the home team managed to coast as the Sharks scored only 11 points over the final 8:28 in the ball game.

"I thought we did a great job in the first half," said head coach Gary Tuell. "We played about as hard as we could play. I don't know if we just got tired, but we struggled to score in the second half. Sooner than later, if you can't keep up offensively it bites you. You have to be able to put the ball in the basket."

Barnes capped the night with a triple-double, collecting 26 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists for ERAU.

NSU will return home this Saturday to face Saint Leo on Senior Day. For complete coverage of the action, log onto NSUSharks.com or follow the Sharks on Twitter @NSU_MBasketball.
