FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – In the first game of the series against Sunshine State Conference provisional member Embry-Riddle, the Nova Southeastern softball team fell, 6-0, at the AD Griffin Sports Complex on Friday evening.
The Eagles took no time to get on the board as Kassidy Simons sent a two-run homer into the net inches away from the left-field foul post in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 Eagle (6-3) lead.
After a scoreless frame, the Eagles tacked on three more in the top of the third for a 5-0 advantage, one they would hold until the final inning where a Shark error allowed for an insurance run.
NSU's (1-7) closest chance to scoring came in the bottom of the third with runners at second and third, but Embry-Riddle's starting pitcher, Ilona Andringa, was able to strikeout the next Shark batter to halt the Nova Southeastern from scoring.
Dana Edmundson finished 2-for-3, while
Megan Granitto and
Ashley Roe tallied the other two hits for the Sharks, each going 1-for-3.
For the Eagles, Maggie Scott went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two stolen bases while Simons went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.
Lexie Storrer (1-3) took the loss for NSU, pitching all 7.0 innings and allowing six runs (2 ER) on 11 hits with four strikeouts.
Andringa (3-2) tossed a complete game shutout to earn the win, allowing only four hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.
