Edmundson Homers, NSU Grabs Doubleheader Sweep Over Auburn Montgomery

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team continued its hot streak on Tuesday evening, picking up a doubleheader sweep over the host Auburn Montgomery Warhawks.

In the first game, NSU used AUM's errors to their advantage for an 8-1 victory before grabbing a 4-3 come-from-behind win on Dana Edmundson's two-run homer in the nightcap.

The two wins push Nova Southeastern to an even 10-10 on the overall season, while AUM falls to 14-9.

GAME ONE

NSU wasted no time getting on the board in the first game of the twinbill, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With two outs on the board, Lexie Storrer drew a walk and after back-to-back singles by Megan Granitto and Ashely Roe loaded the bases, AUM's starting pitcher Rachel Ragland walked Megan Maloney to force Storrer across the plate.

After a scoreless frame, the Sharks tallied single runs in the next three innings for a 4-0 advantage, capitalizing on the four Warhawk errors committed.

It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth inning when AUM made it on the scoreboard with a Jaycie Walker double, to bring the score to 4-1 in favor of the Sharks.

Because a three-run lead wasn't enough, NSU exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth, tallying the final runs of the game for either team and giving the visiting Sharks an 8-1 lead. Dana Edmundson, this week's Sunshine State Player of the Week, led off with a double to left field and two batters later, Storrer pushed her to third with a single through the right side. Granitto was hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases for the Sharks and an RBI-single by Roe brought Edmundson home for the 5-1 NSU edge. After a pop up by Maloney, Samantha Gonzales ripped a bases-clearing triple to right center, scoring Roe, Granitto and Storrer.

Granitto finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Roe was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and a scored run. Gonzales tallied a career-high four RBI after going 2-for-4 and Storrer was 2-for-4 in game one and scored three times.

Storrer improved to 6-5 on the season, picking up the win for NSU after all 7.0 innings in the circle. She allowed six hits with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO

Unlike the first game, the nightcap saw the Warhawks get on board first in the home-half of the first inning, grabbing a 1-0 advantage on a ground out by K Sparks. An RBI-single by Ragland and an RBI-triple by Parker Pinholster in the second gave AUM a 3-0 lead, and also served as the last time the Warhawks would score.

In the top of the third, NSU used sacrifice hits by Edmundson and Dakota Villella to cut the deficit to just one run, 3-2.

After a quick fourth inning and two outs on the board in the fifth, Dana Edmundson sent her second two-run homer of the season over the right-field wall, giving the Sharks a 4-3 lead and the eventual victory.

Edmundson led all Sharks going 2-for-3 with three RBI while Erica Winter was 1-for-2 with one run scored.

Winter (4-1) took the win in game two, going the distance and allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

The Sharks will be back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, Mar. 8, in a doubleheader against host West Florida beginning at 3:00 p.m. For live coverage, head to NSUSharks.com, or follow @NSU_Softball on Twitter.
