FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team dropped both parts of a doubleheader to SSC-provisional team Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday afternoon at Simpson Field. With the two wins, the Sailfish take the series, 3-0.
The Sailfish used two strong innings to cruise to a 9-2 victory over the Sharks in game one before scoring the lone two runs of game two for either team in the first inning for a 2-0 win.
With the two losses, the Sharks fall below the .500 mark at 22-23 while PBA improves to 28-15.
GAME ONE
The Sailfish came out of the gates strong in the bottom of the first inning, using an RBI-single by Guerra and errors by the Sharks to take an earl 3-0 advantage.
After two scoreless frames, Nova Southeastern cut the deficit to one run, 3-2, in the top of the fourth.
Lexie Storrer led off with a stand-up double to center field and a throwing error by PBA's left fielder on
Alex Suzuki's fly out allowed her to make it to third. The next batter,
Ashley Roe, drew the first walk of the game before stealing second. The two base runners were brought home on back-to-back RBI-singles by
Megan Maloney and
Sydney Lageyre, serving as the only runs the Sharks would tally.
PBA exploded for four runs in the home half of the inning to stave off the Sharks, before tacking on another insurance run in the sixth for a final score of 9-2.
Erica Winter (6-9) took the loss after going the distance for the Sharks, allowing nine runs (8 ER) on 13 hits.
PBA's starting pitcher, Nikki Brinegar (8-5), was game one's winner after tossing the first 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Jana Wagner closed out the final 2.0 innings and did not allow a run to score on three hits.
GAME TWO
Similarly to the first game, the Sailfish made it on the board to take a 2-0 lead on and RBI-double by Magnolia West and an RBI-single by Loren Kilgore.
That score would hold throughout the entirety of the second game as neither team was able to score.
Storrer (16-10) was handed the loss, pitching all 6.0 innings for NSU and allow two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
Ashton Adkins (16-5) picked up her second win of the weekend, tossing the first 6.0 innings allowing five hits, before Brinegar came in for the final inning and the save, giving up one hit.
