HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Prior to the match, the Sharks recognized five members of the team as part of their Senior Night ceremonies: OT Bah, Arns Carrenard, Bradley Fountain, Oliver Karlsson, and Darwin Lom.
  • The match started fairly slowly, as the first shot from either side, a free kick off the foot of Fountain directly into the hands of the Fighting Knights' keeper, didn't come until a couple of ticks after the five-minute mark.
  • Lynn's first shot came in the 23rd minute, but it went over the crossbar.
  • The Sharks' next good look came when Aleks Berg recovered a Knights misplay in the 26th minute, but after some crafty footwork, his shot was sent away at the line.
  • The offense had one more chance before halftime, but Lom's 41st-minute shot from straight away just hit off the top of the crossbar.
  • Less than three minutes into the second half, the Sharks nearly scored again, as Lom attempted a header off a Jan Luca Ahillen corner kick, but that, too, was stopped just in time.
  • Lom had another try in the 65th minute, but the Lynn keeper made a leaping grab to recover the ball for the save.
  • Ignacio Goya's shot in the 74th minute was also tipped away by a leaping Lynn keeper.
  • Berg had a close one in the 84th, but this time the keeper dove to his left to bat the ball away.
  • With 3:39 remaining in the first overtime period, Fountain's attempt sailed just wide of the left post.
  • In the game's final minute, the Fighting Knights finally had their first shot on goal of the match and one of the few close calls for the Sharks' defense, but keeper Brian Lopez had the timing down to kick it away without harm.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This match was the Sharks' first tie under head coach Matt Watts, who has led the program since the 2016 season, and the first overall since Nov. 4, 2014, when they drew with the Rollins Tars in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament quarterfinal round and advanced on penalty kicks.
  • The last draw at home, or in conference play, was on Oct. 12, 2013, by a 1-1 score vs. No. 10 Saint Leo. It was also the first scoreless tie since Sept. 4, 2014, at Young Harris.
  • With an SSC record of 7-2-1, the Sharks finish tied with Barry and Lynn for second in the conference, their highest finish since a 5-2-1 record in 2004, their first season as full conference members.
  • With 23 goals scored in their 10 conference games, the Sharks tied with Palm Beach Atlantic and Florida Southern for the best offense in league play. This is just the second time in 15 years as SSC members that they led that category, the first time being 2010, when they scored 17 goals in eight league matches.
  • The Sharks also led in goals allowed (7) and goal differential (+16) in conference play, the first time they've led in either stat.
  • With an active scoreless streak of 261:46, Lopez improved his goals-against average to 0.848 and his save percentage to .750 in the seven games he has appeared in, all of which have come during conference play. Those numbers place him second and third, respectively, among keepers in SSC play, while his three shutouts rank second as well.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • The Sharks outshot the Fighting Knights 20-5 in the match, including a 6-1 edge at halftime and a 16-2 advantage at the end of 90 minutes of regulation.
  • Lom led the team with six shots and two on goal, while Michael Lawrence had four shots to go along with three apiece by Berg, Fountain and Goya. Berg and Goya also had two of their shots stopped by the Lynn keeper.
  • The defense held their opponents scoreless for the fifth time in 10 conference games, and the seventh time out of 15 matches overall. Those seven shutouts tie the SSC-era program record, matching totals by the 2004 and 2008 teams, though the Sharks played 20 times in each of those two seasons. The last squad with more shutouts in a single year was the 2002 group that had nine in 20 matches.
  • As a team, the Sharks have allowed just 14 goals in their 15 matches, or 0.92 goals allowed per 90 minutes, putting them on pace to allow less than one goal per game for just the second time in program history. The 2003 squad was the first, allowing just 18 goals in 19 matches, or 0.91 per 90 minutes, also setting the program record for fewest goals allowed in a full season in the process.
UP NEXT:
The Sharks will advance to the SSC Tournament for the first time since the 2014 season, and have earned a tournament-hosting bid for the first time since 2007, also the last time the Sharks won a postseason match. As the No. 4 seed, the Sharks will host fifth-seeded Florida Tech on Monday, October 29 at 6 p.m. For complete coverage of the action, visit the schedule page on NSUSharks.com.
