HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Bucs struck first early in the match, scoring on a free kick from 21 yards out in the sixth minute.
  • The Sharks had an opportunity to tie the match less than two minutes later, but in what would be a sign of things to come throughout the match, Sebastian Loibl and Bradley Fountain both had shots stopped by the keeper.
  • Another chance presented itself in the 15th minute after a Barry foul in the box. Stefan Faistenauer lined up for the penalty kick, but it, too, was saved.
  • The Sharks finally found their equalizer at the 27-minute mark, when Jan Luca Ahillen hit Aleks Berg with a perfect pass on the right side of the box, leaving the net wide open.
  • The Sharks kept up their pressure out of halftime, with four shots in the first 11 minutes of the second half, but it was Barry who would score in the 59th minute on their first shot of the half, a rocket from 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net.
  • Not giving up, the offense began its search for the second equalizer, but Darwin Lom and Ahillen were both stopped at the net in the 61st minute, followed by Loibl and Ignacio Goya just a few minutes later.
  • After an extended silence, during which time Sharks goalkeeper Brian Lopez turned away four shots, including three saves in a span of 4:21, the offense gave a last-ditch effort at pushing the match into overtime, but to no avail. Lom's 86th-minute shot was saved once again, while Loibl's in the 88th sailed high.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • In addition to ending the eight-game winning streak, the loss also snapped a four-game road winning streak dating back to last season. The Sharks' three road wins to start the season was the best start away from home for the program since 2005.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • Despite 21 shots on the night, of which 14 were on target, the Sharks could only muster one goal because of 13 saves by Bucs keeper Marco Sordi. He made five saves on 11 shots in the first half, followed by a second half in which 10 shots were attempted and all eight that were on goal were saved.
  • In just the second game of his career, Lopez, a freshman, made five saves to limit the deficit to just one goal and keep the offense within striking distance.
  • Coming off the bench for the first time all season, fellow true freshman Aleks Berg scored the third goal of his career and his first in conference play. Combined with his Sunshine State Conference-high seven assists, Berg's 13 points place him third on the team and among the Top-10 in the conference.
  • Ahillen was credited with his fifth assist of the season on Berg's score, giving him the second-best total on the team and a tie for third on the SSC leaderboard.
  • Loibl and Lom each led the team with five shots and four on goal, but were unable to convert.
