Sharks Fall to Barry in ESPN3 DII Showcase

NSU will close out 2017-18 home play on Wednesday, Feb. 21

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's basketball team fell to the host Barry Buccaneers, 69-57, on Saturday afternoon in the Div. II Showcase broadcasted on ESPN3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
1ST QUARTER | The Sharks jumped out to a 4-0 lead, capitalizing on layups by Maria Bardeeva and Alison Hughes, before the Buccaneers used a 5-0 run to steal the lead, 5-4. A split pair of free throws by Christen Prasse knotted the game, 5-5, before the home team got the advantage back on their side with a layup by Kiara Palmer, only for the Sharks to tie it once again at 10-10. The Bucs went on to outscore the Sharks 7-4 in the remaining three minutes, taking a 17-14 edge into the second.
 
2ND QUARTER | The Bucs took advantage early in the second, grabbing a 10-point lead, 24-14, with a 7-0 in the first 2:30. NSU responded with a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to just one point, 28-27 at the 3:28 mark. That would be the closest the would get for the rest of the game, as Barry continued to put on the offensive pressure for a 35-29 advantage at the break.
 
3RD QUARTER | The Sharks struggled to score in the third, shooting 30.8 percent from the field (4-of-13). The Bucs pushed their lead back out to double-digits at the 5:58 mark, 45-34, before taking their largest lead of the game three minutes later, 52-36. The Sharks managed to cut Barry's lead back down to 10 points (52-42) with a 6-0 run to close out the third quarter.
 
4TH QUARTER | A split pair of free throws by Taylor Smith and a trey by Hailey Conley brought the deficit down to six, 52-46, at the 8:41 mark. A 5-3 run, capitalized by a three-pointer by Skyla Osceola, brought the Sharks within four, 55-51, but Barry responded with a 14-6 run to end up on top, 69-57.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Hughes led all Sharks with 16 points, also adding three steals. Osceola was next with nine points, making three assists.
  • Prasse tallied eight points and eight boards with three assists and also recorded three assists.
  • Bardeeva had seven points with seven rebounds while Thompson pulled down eight rebounds, four offensive.
  • Cheray Saunders posted three steals.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Prasse's eight rebounds matched her season-high, while Bardeeva's two blocks also matched her season-high.
  • The loss today splits the season series with the Bucs, and moves the overall record to 25-28 in NSU's favor.
  • The loss moves the Sharks to the eighth spot in the SSC standings while the win for Barry moves them up to fifth.

The Sharks will close out regular-season home play on Wednesday, Feb. 21, against Palm Beach Atlantic at 5:30 p.m. Prior to the game, the NSU Athletics Department and the women's basketball team will honor their three seniors, Mary Hirt, Amanda Tivenius and Kayla Wright.
