Tampa Tops Sharks in Series Opener

The series will conclude tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team fell, 7-1, in the first part of a three-game series against the visiting Spartans of the University of Tampa on Friday night at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
TOP 2ND: The Spartans took a 2-0 lead after the second, capitalizing on an RBI-single by Emalee Jansen and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Christina Clauberg.
 
TOP 7TH: Tampa exploded for five runs in the top half of the seventh, using RBI-singles by Maddie Farrell and Jansen and an RBI-double by Shelby Press to take an overwhelming 7-0 lead.
 
BOTTOM 7TH: The Sharks spoiled the shutout for the Spartans in the home half of the inning, as an RBI-double to left by Daneila Bautista scored Alex Suzuki from second tallied the lone run of the night for NSU.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • The Sharks were held to four hits on the night, tallied by Kailynn Blackwood, Dana Edmundson, Lexie Storrer and Bautista.
  • In her first time at the plate this season, Suzuki drew the lone walk of the night by the Sharks.
  • Storrer moved to 7-12 on the season with the loss, allowing seven runs (6 ER) on 11 hits. She also dished out four strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Sharks forced Tampa to leave nine runners on base.
  • NSU was struck out eight times on the night.

UP NEXT: 

The three-game series between the Sharks and the Spartans will continue tomorrow with a doubleheader slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
