Sharks Collect Sunday Split in Non-Conference Doubleheader

NSU now 14-9 on the year following busy week of action

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.  –  Faced with its second doubleheader in as many afternoons, No. 18 Nova Southeastern came away with a Sunday split, beating NYIT 7-4 before falling to the Bears 2-1 at the NSU Baseball Complex. Dylan Harris paced the Sharks with three hits in game one. However, the offense was unable to capitalize in the weekend finale, leaving nine runners on base in just the third loss for Nova Southeastern in its last 11 ball games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE
The Sharks wasted no time setting the tone in game one, using an Andrew Liberty sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Christian Demby would later score on a wild pitch when Harris followed with a RBI-single to extend the advantage to 3-0 just two innings into the contest.

After retiring the first six batters he faced, freshman Jarret Krzyzanowski ran into a bit of trouble in the third, surrendering a two-out double that pulled the Bears back to within a run at 3-2. The momentum would soon shift right back in favor of the Sharks, though, as Demby lifted a run-scoring double into the alley in right center before a RBI-groundout by Bryan Diaz stretched the margin back to 5-2.

The lead ballooned to as large as 7-2 following two more runs in the fourth. NYIT would respond with two of its own in the ensuing frame, yet the combination of Cameron Churchill and Joe Strzelecki out of the bullpen would stop the bleeding, securing the victory for Krzyzanowski in his first career start.

GAME TWO
Both sides remained scoreless through four innings of play until NYIT's Zach Kleinwaks snuck a two-out double down the third-base line to put the Bears on top. The Sharks would quickly answer back, though, in the bottom of the fifth. Igniting the offense with his second double of the ball game, Dominic Diana came around to score two batters later when Nick Gallo found a gap through left side of the infield for a RBI-single.

However, the 1-1 score didn't last long. After Demby set the first two batters down in order in the sixth, the Bears tagged back-to-back hits and regained a 2-1 edge on a Jonathan Tenaglia single into left.

Needing at least one run to extend the game in the bottom of the seventh, the first two Nova Southeastern batters reached on consecutive infield hits, including a bunt single by Harris. Gallo would attempt to advance both runners on a sac bunt in the ensuing at-bat, yet failed to do so following a 1-5 putout to erase the lead runner. The Sharks still remained in position to force extras with the tying run just 180 feet away, but a costly strikeout and pop-up to shortstop ended the threat as the Bears escaped with the narrow win.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • Nova Southeastern tallied only seven hits in its game one victory, yet managed to manufacture offense thanks to eight walks and seven stolen bases.
  • Harris swiped a combined five bags on the afternoon, raising his Sunshine State Conference-leading total to 16 on the year.
  • Reliever Michael Gizzi struck out the side in the seventh inning of game two, giving him 16 straight outs all recorded via strikeout.
