NSU Splits on Last Day of THE Spring Games

The Sharks will return to home play on Mar. 6

CLERMONT, Fla. – Finishing up play in the 2018 THE Spring Games, the Nova Southeastern softball team split a pair of games to end with a 3-1 record over the weekend. The Sharks dropped a 4-1 decision to the No. 19 Winona State Warriors before shutting out Upper Iowa, 2-0, in the nightcap.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
FINAL SCORE:  No. 19 Winona State Warriors 4 (W, M. Larsen, 3-2; S: L. Kleman, 1), Nova Southeastern Sharks 1 (L: L. Storrer, 6-10)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 1ST: The Warriors were the first to strike, taking a 1-0 lead on an Ali Nowak RBI-single to left.
 
TOP 2ND: The Sharks tied things up the next half-inning later, as Megan Maloney sent an RBI-single of her own through the right side to score Dominique Sprengers, who led the inning off with a walk.
 
BOTTOM 4TH: With runners at first and second, WSU's Kristina Alhers sent a two-RBI triple over Maloney's head in right field to take a 3-1 lead.
 
BOTTOM 6TH: The Warriors tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, as Kleman singled through the left side to score Van Zyl, posting the final run for either team and the eventual winning score of 4-1.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • The Sharks tallied seven hits in total, as Sprengers went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Kayla Kight was 2-for-2 with a walk.
  • Maloney finished 1-for-3 with the lone RBI for the Sharks.
  • Keeley Mayers, Kight and Dana Edmundson also drew walks, while Edmundson's was intentional.
  • Storrer took the loss after 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with two strikeouts. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Sharks outhit the Warriors 7-6.
  • This was the first time the Sharks and the Warriors faced off.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 2ND: To lead off the inning, Mayers doubled to right field and was advanced to third on a wild pitch two batters later. The same batter, Storrer, sent a sacrifice fly to right field, giving plenty of time for Mayers to cross the plate for a 1-0 NSU lead.
 
BOTTOM 6TH: Storrer notched her second RBI of the game in the sixth, sending another sacrifice fly out to center to score Sprengers, who doubled to right center in the at-bat prior and was advanced on a passed ball. Storrer's RBI gave the Sharks a 2-0 advantage and served as the last run scored of the game.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Storrer posted both RBI of the game, both sacrifice flies.
  • The Sharks were limited to three hits on the game, and were recorded by Mayers, Sprengers and Maloney.
  • Sprengers improved her record to 4-2, pitching the first 4.1 innings and allowing no runs on six hits.
  • Storrer finished out the final 2.2 innings, earning the save after allowing only one hit with three strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The win was Sprengers' first shutout of the season.

UP NEXT: 

The Sharks will return to home-field advantage on Tuesday, Mar. 6, hosting Albany State in a doubleheader slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
