Sharks Take Break From Conference Action For South Region Crossover

NSU will play in three games against Gulf South Conference opponents

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After a busy month of Sunshine State Conference action, the Nova Southeastern volleyball team will head to Hoover, Ala. to compete in the 2019 South Region Crossover, where they will play in three games against members of the Gulf South Conference. On Friday, the Sharks will take on Mississippi College and Union, before wrapping up play on Saturday against Montevallo.

The Sharks currently hold a winning overall record of 10-6 and are on a two-game win streak, earning back-to-back sweeps over a strong Eckerd team and Florida Southern. The Sharks offense is driven by starting outside hitter Ally Ford, who averages 3.54 kills per set and leads the team with 202 kills. She also leads the team in aces, with 24. Alex Boone is another force on the Shark offense, leading the team with a .365 hitting percentage, is second with 120 kills and averages 2.07 kills per set from the middle.
 
The Sharks' first opponent of the crossover is Mississippi College, who sport a 7-13 record and are currently on a two-game losing streak. Four Choctaws boast triple-digit kill numbers, Jamie Boros (238), Kendall Platt (186), Lexie Laurendine (136) and Kate Bass (117), with Boros leading the squad with her 3.01 kills per set. Laurendine also serves as MC's main setter, tallying 5.19 assists per set, and is second on the team with her 196 digs. The Sharks will play the Choctaws on Friday, Oct. 18 at 11:15 a.m. CST.
 
Next, NSU will take on the Union College Bulldogs, who are currently 12-7 overall and are 6-1 in the GSC, their best GSC start to a season since joining the league in 2012. Union's Meghan Delaney leads the squad with her 3.99 kills per set, 283 kills and 24 service aces. Defensively, starting libero Abbie Rahn picks up 5.00 digs per set, and is ranked first on the team and No. 3 in the GSC with 360 digs. Both players earned GSC weekly honors last week. The Sharks and the Bulldogs will square off on Friday at 7:00 p.m. CST.
 
Finally, Nova Southeastern will compete against Montevallo on Saturday to wrap up play in the 2019 Crossover. The Falcons enter the weekend coming off back-to-back losses and holds a 10-9 overall record. The Falcons have three hitters who average between 2.63 and 2.92 kills per set led by Brioni Dixon who tops the squad with 216 kills. Defensively, both Dixon and middle blocker Hannah Fernandez have over 60 blocks this season. This match is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. CST.
