Sharks Upset Tars, Keep SSC Regular Season Title Hopes Alive

Bonenclark, Christophe combine for all three goals in shutout win Tuesday

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After failing to convert on a number of chances in the first half, Nova Southeastern cashed in on its opportunities in the second, as the Sharks erupted following intermission en route to an impressive 3-0 win over No. 20 Rollins on Tuesday. Hannah Christophe tallied her team-leading 13th goal of the season in the effort, while Jessica Bonenclark provided an enormous spark off the bench with the first multi-goal performance of her career. Now 7-1-1 in Sunshine State Conference play, the Sharks can clinch the league's regular season title with a victory at Eckerd on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sharks controlled nearly the entire first half, holding the Tars without a shot for the opening 40:48 and just one overall for the opening 45 minutes of the match.
  • NSU's first real scoring threat came in the 16th minute, but Emma Heikkila's attempt missed just wide of the right post.
  • Bonenclark and Heikkila nearly linked up in the final moments of the first half on a corner kick. This time, however, Heikkila's header was saved by Tars' keeper Elena Beasley.
  • After holding an 8-1 shot advantage in the first half, the Sharks registered just four attempts following the break. Yet, three of those attempts found the back of the net, as head coach John Constable's team pulled away.
  • The NSU faithful could finally breathe a bit easier in the 55th minute when Christophe settled a pass from Emily O'Connell, took a touch around the Rollins keeper, and finished the empty-net score.
  • NSU kept its foot on the gas, and doubled its lead in the 70th minute when Heikkila slotted a perfectly-placed ball to Bonenclark, who buried her second goal of the season into the back of the net.
  • A bit over five minutes later, Bonenclark slammed the door shut on the Tars, hammering home a feed from fellow senior Myriah Troutman.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Tars marks the second straight in the series for the Sharks. Prior to 2018, NSU had only shut Rollins out once – coming back on Aug. 26, 2000.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • NSU keeper Shannon Hearty notched two saves in the effort, running her record to 9-0 on the year.
  • The Sharks held a 6-5 edge over the Tars in corner kicks.
