DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men's and women's track and field teams opened up competition on Thursday at the Peach Belt Championships on Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach campus. At the end of the first day of action, the women's team is in second behind host ERAU with 21 points, while the men are tied for fourth.
FIELD EVENTS
- Forgoing defense of her PBC heptathlon title for more individual points, senior Maddy Kenyon was the lone Shark to climb the podium on Thursday – making two appearances as a medalist. In the first individual field event of the meet, the javelin, Kenyon recorded a throw of 34.29m (112-6) to finish with bronze. In her second event, the long jump, Kenyon ascended to silver with a career-long leap of 5.85m (19-2.5).
- Kenyon added another NCAA Championships provisional qualification with her performance in the long jump.
- Freshmen Timothy Young (6.96m/22-10) and Avan Edobor (6.86m/22-6.25) joined sophomore Zaheem Anderson (6.80m/22-3.75) in finishing fifth through seventh in the long jump.
- Senior Christopher Horn also notched points for the men, coming in fifth in the javelin with a distance of 48.47m (159-0).
RUNNING EVENTS
- Kicking off the running events in the evening, senior Eric Moate led an NSU three-qualifier effort in the 100m. The favorite entering the meet, Moate holds a healthy lead with the top preliminary performance of 10.54, ahead of Anderson in second at 10.75. Young also joins the pair with a 10.88 in eighth place. All three now move on to the 100m finals on Saturday at 12:35 p.m.
- Freshman Michelle Bauer closed out the meet day with a final score for the women, finishing fourth in the 10,000m run with a time of 41:03.92.
- Sophomore Kuepper Feehan advanced to the 1,500m final with a sixth-place preliminary time of 4:54.18 – a new career best. The final is set for 1:40 p.m. on Saturday.
- Junior Joel Lacy also advances to the 1,500m finals on the men's side with a 10th-place 4:11.43. The final is set for 1:50 p.m. on Saturday.
- Freshman Charissa Bacon moves ahead to the 400m final with a season-best 58.58 at sixth in the preliminary. The final is set for 12:20 p.m. on Saturday.
MULTI-EVENTS
- Horn comes out of the first day of the decathlon riding in second place with 3,243 points. Horn won the long jump with a jump of 6.63m (21-9), was second in the high jump at 1.78m (5-10), third in the shot put 10.40m at (34-1.5), third in the 400m with a career-best 53.60 and fourth in the 100m at 11.56. Classmate Kyle Forsythe is also in seventh with 2,545 points. The decathlon begins again with the final five events at 8:00 a.m. on Friday.
- Senior Lisa Blackwood finished the first day of the heptathlon in third place with 2,289 points. In her highest finish of the opening day, Blackwood ranked third in the high jump with a height of 1.50m (4-11). The heptathlon resumes at 8:00 a.m. on Friday with the final three events.
