HOW IT HAPPENED:
1
st Half | Last Saturday's defeat appeared to carry into Wednesday, as the Sharks quickly fell behind 6-0 in the opening 1:08 of the contest. A handful of defensive lapses allowed the Sailfish to remain in front 12-6 at the 16:02 mark. Some shuffling of the lineup, though, forced PBA to go scoreless for a 4:03 stretch before
Shane Hunter knotted up the ball game on a three-pointer from the wing. Jackson's third three in as many attempts pushed the Sailfish lead back out to five until a
Mark Matthews three-point play trimmed the margin to 30-28 with 7:28 to play. NSU could never quite find its footing in the first half, however, and watched the two-point margin extend to eight following a Sailfish 6-0 surge. The deficit later grew to as many as 11 down the stretch, and would sit at 44-35 entering the break – matching the largest halftime deficit for the Sharks this season.
2
nd Half | Trailing 52-37 in the early stages of the second half, the NSU bench led the charge, keying a 9-1 response thanks to a pair of midrange buckets by
Lukas Speidel. Still, the Sharks found themselves down 13 once again moments later.
Connor Zinaich would erupt for the next nine NSU points, though, to keep the Sharks within striking distance, only trailing 62-55 just over midway through the half. NSU's well-known pressure defense finally managed to wreak some havoc, forcing the Sailfish into six turnovers over the ensuing 2:42. As a result, Zinaich was able to convert another lay-in on a feed from
Matt Weir before giving the Sharks their first lead of the night following a three-point play still with 6:13 remaining. Tied at 69-69, a Speidel jumper helped NSU regain the lead when Weir then tallied his first and only points of the night to extend the margin to 74-69 with 2:45 showing on the clock. The advantage reached as many as six for the Sharks. However, with multiple chances to put PBA away, NSU left the door open by committing turnovers on three straight possessions over the final 1:34. Allowing the Sailfish one last opportunity, the Sharks would pay, as a near miscue was eventually kicked out to Jackson, who buried a contested three with less than five seconds left to secure the upset bid.
